Hinterlands (the title reported in this page is incorrect, there's no "the") is a short, expositional and psychotic version of Contact.
It requires a couple of reads (hardly a problem given its length), but to me it's the most interesting and fearsome take on the them of "encounter with superior civilisations" ever.
Thank you William Gibson for this absolute gem.

Gets a little better every time I experience the story.

If you've read it on paper, try putting it in your ear holes to experience it in a totally different way. There's a podcast called pseudopod, which offers free content. One such item of content was an excellent reading of this story. Episode 486.

I have arranged my thoughts on this short story into a haiku:

"Lukewarm to the gift,
That the unknown let you live,
Wasting your life's work."
