Maurey, fully grown and a leader in his own right, finds himself pulled from his quest across the sea to protect a young princess whose life has been thrown into turmoil following her brother's murder. Treason in Eswy begins shortly after Nightwalker’s conclusion, not surprisingly, but it immediately introduces new central characters and a narrative technique that Johansen uses effectively throughout the remainder of the series: first-person alternating narration. The story opens with Korby, a “barbarian” Fenlander, telling his “account of the treason in Eswy” (1); the second section is “the account of Eleanor of Eswy” (9) of the same situation, but different places and incidents. The tale is ...more

Maurey finds himself on a new adventure across the sea to a neighboring kingdom.

He is sought to protect the Princess Eleanor, whose brother has been murdered. The Princess is promised to Maurey's brother, King Dugald, and he would trust only Maurey with her protection. But it seems there is more wickedness afoot and both Maurey and Eleanor must work together to save both kingdoms.

The sequel to NIGHTWALKER may be even better than the first book! I

The sequel maybe even better than the first book! I was pleasantly surprised yet again! I do admit to being slightly confused at the beginning of the novel. I was unfamiliar with the characters that were telling the story, but it was soon cleared and I think I may have enjoyed it more than I did with Maurey’s POV in the first novel.

Johansen continues to impress me with her gift of storytelling. Its likeness is parallel with the first novel in it’s fast paced plot, compelling characters and abund

A 3 1/2 star very well-written YA fantasy. Everything in this medieval world feels authentic, because the author is a medieval scholar and very epic in her writing. My only arguments were: 1) The beginning was confusing--the narrator is a new character and I kept wondering if I was supposed to know who Korby was and how long it had been since the last book left off (I still don't know). 2) I wanted more info about Maurey! After having his POV in the first book, I felt out of the loop with him ...more

Mostly, I write fantasy (epic fantasy ... character-driven epic fantasy ... with shapeshifters, demons, gods, and ... Moth, around whom even the gods get a bit nervous). These days, I largely write for adults, though I've written many children's and YA fantasy novels and some children's science fiction, as well as picture books, plus I've been known to perpetrate literary criticism.
