I really wish that Ms.Jance would write faster. I love her books and this one was interesting and fast paced. I am happy that I am not Joanna Brady. She has way to many irons in the fire!

This new offering by J.A. Jance, Damage Control, is as good as her others in her Joanna Brady series. For those who've not had a taste of Jance, you're in for atreat, esp with this 13 book series. Joanna is the sheriff of Bisbee in Cochise County, Arizona. Her first case happens to be an accident off an overpass, which looks like a suicide pact between an elderly local couple, but when the evidence pops up, some very suspicious characters loom in the picture. Another case, where an intruder br...more

Alfred and Martha Beasley take a little trip to the Montezuma Pass Overlook. The couple is very elderly and reminisced on the way about when they bought their car years ago, about their estranged daughters and other things that have played a big part in their lives. When reaching the Overlook the two set out for a little picnic. They are a lovely couple and a happy sight to see.
But when Arizona Sheriff Joanna Brady hears about the incident it is with horror. The couple has had an accident a...more

Damage Control, by J.A. Jance is book # 13 in the Joanna Brady series. Although I have read a few of Jance's mysteries and enjoyed them, I have not read a lot of books in this series.
HarperCollins Short Review
An intruder is murdered. An elderly couple runs their car off a cliff while holding hands. A trailer fire kills a man. Skeletal remains are found in a plastic bag. A quiet weekend in Cochise County, Arizona is a thing of the past. “Damage Control” combines suicide, murder, and may...more

Great Navajo Reservation mystery/detective genre, woman sheriff. We've watched these people through marriages, divorces, widowings, kids. Easy to relate to alongside them. Start with early books, as everyone and life on the reservation changes over time. Today's Navajos, like the rest of us, do not see the world the same way we did a couple of decads ago.

Everyone!
JA Jance is my favorite author and the Joanna Brady series is my favorite series, and this book was the BEST of the entire series, bar none!
This book was very ambitious--it has been a very busy time in Cochise County. There are four separate police incidents in one weekend that Joanne gets involved in, her hubby, Butch, is preparing to head off on a book tour, AND their 4-month old baby is still not sleeping through the night.

Reading JA Jances serial mysteries is like inviting an old friend into your home once a year to catch up and chat. For me the mysteries, although very good, almost take a back seat as the lives of the main characters evolve.

i have read joanna brady books before and tho't they were 'ok'. this one REALLY got me and i totally enjoyed it. i would most definatly recommend it. there are several story lines happening and they all get wrapped up by the end which in some books i have read lately there always seemed to be danglers which i hated!
would always recommend jance's jp beaumont series but after this i will re-think MORE joanna brady!

I like Joanna Brady and I like Cochise County, Arizona. This enjoyable mystery breaks no new ground but it was entertaining and Jance lays out the clues for the reader as well as for the protagonist. The narrator of the audio version was outstanding, making all the voices seem very real and capturing the petulance Joanna believes she hears in her mother's voice, the youth in Jenny's voice, and the weariness is Joanna's as she tries to solve what looks like a murder suicide of an elderly couple, ...more

I don't like Jance's Joanna Brady books nearly as well as her J.P. Beaumonts. Her third-person writing style really pulls me out of the story, particularly with her use of first and last names for characters in places where it's really not necessary. I find myself constantly rewriting sentences in my head, which isn't good. Use of the third person shouldn't distance the reader from the characters. Unfortunately, in this series, it does.
That being said, I did like the story. There were a lot ...more

I have read most of the JA Jance books. I loved the JP Beaumont series and I've grown to love the Joanna Brady books, too. I look forward to Ms. Jance books being published and this one did not disappoint. I love the Southwest and have been to Tucson, Bisbee, and Tubac several times so I can visualize the areas where Joanna goes in her pursuit of the criminals. The character of Joanna is strong principled but compassionate. She is struggling to be a good mother, wife, and Sheriff of Cochise...more

I really like the character of Joanna Brady and have read all the books in this series. Brady is strong female protagonist who juggles career, marriage, kids, a meddlesome (albeit funny) mother and life is NEVER perfect.
I like crime fiction, but this is tame. Damage Control isn't edgy, graphic or full of questionable language and sexuality. Proves that a good book can be written without inserting all that garbage. Although, to be honest, I like the edgier stuff better.

J. A. Jance continues to get better and better. This newest book in the Sheriff Brady series answers some of the unanswered questions about her father and late husband as well as showing her mother in a whole new light. In fact, she can't get over how her mother and Butch (her new husband) have suddenly become the best of friends. There are several endings and new beginnings in this book and it is an extremly satisfying read for those who have read the other books in the series. If you haven...more

I enjoyed this book but it wasn't a real page turner. The story includes an elderly couple's suicide and the murders of two disabled people. The main focus is the suicide story that reveals that the son-in-law had been slowly poisoning the older man to convince him he had altheimers. Rather then face that he and his wife decide to kill themselves, thus leaving a tidy fortune to the son-in-law and daughter. The murders get tied into each other in the end but have no real connection to the suicides...more

Joanna is once again juggling all aspects of her life as she sets about solving several murders within her jurisdiction. She does it well, but we see her flaws and indecisions, too. In other words, Jance makes her a very believable character. Although my favorite Jance character is J.P. Beaumont, this is an excellent book. I would suggest that you begin at the beginning of the Joanna Brady series so that you can watch her and her fellow characters change and grow.

I have to admit that I prefer the series with Seattle's brooding, hunky detective, J.P. Beaumont, but a new book in the Sheriff Joanna Brady series will do until the next Beau book is released.
This is the 13th book in the Brady series and as usual, the primary reason I like these is to find out what Joanna and her family are up to and the mystery itself is somewhat secondary. This one didn't surprise but then it didn't disappoint me either.

It was great to read an suspenseful and engrossing mystery over a hot couple of summer days. Though this is a continuation of a series with the main character, Sheriff Joanna Brady, it easily can be read as a stand-alone. (No, it is not a Western). It was a great mix of current mystery, relationships of past, present, and future, and an interesting portrait of the leadership and management style of a female law enforcement professional.

What I read on my vacation part three. The last time I read the Joanna Brady series was two or three southwest vacations ago, when I kept going and pumped through number eleven. This is number thirteen, so I'll have to go back for twelve, now, and some day I've still got to get to Jance's J.P. Beaumont series (maybe for Seattle trips?)and her thrillers. Great mindless entertainment. Read this one at the Grand Canyon.

i like the 'sheriff joanna brady' series and have grown to want to know what the characters are up to- the book itself wasn't that strong but it was like checking in w/ old friends and seeing what's up in their lives.
jance's newest series is a real 'yawn.' i've tried to read all 3 of them and put them all down midway through jsut not caring enough about the story or characters.

One of my favorite mystery writers. This is her 13th book in the Sherfiff Joanna Brady series.
Joanna as a newborn, a teenage daughter, a writer husband and difficult mother. Cases--an elderly couple's apparent suicide/murder, two trash bags with remains, missing Mexican boy, dueling sisters. Just a quick read with characters I know and like.
