I liked the idea of the plot and the subject matter (re: paranormal) but felt like the story lacked suspense and overdid it with the histrionics.

Several times the author went out of the way to have a character explain things that I just didn't need to know in order to enjoy the story. The expositionary dialog felt awkward (no one ever explains themselves like the last scene of a Scooby-Doo episode). Absolutely hated it. I used to really like Iris Johansen, took quite a long break from reading her books, and this was the first one I purchased when I decided to read her again. The plot sounded interesting, although I normally don't "do" books with paranormal/psychic aspects. I just couldn't get into it at all. The dialogue was extremely stiff, and the word "Lord" was used over and over again, which I didn't understand. Made me shake my head and say "Oh Lord, I need to put this down...", which...more

I have had this book for quite some time, I just never got around to reading it as I wanted to finish all of the Eve Duncan series first.

Engaging, fast-paced…the woman knows what she has to do to bring a reader in for the ride.

The plot: For as long as Megan Blair can remember, she has tried with all her might to silence the voices that scream inside her head. She’s toiled since childhood to ignore the strange pictures that rise up inside her mind, like demons coming forth from the grave to silence her forever.

As Megan grew into an adult, she turned towards medicine and became a talented, soft-hearted physician. The voices grew dormant over time and Megan concentrated on saving the sick and wounded. Her only problem? Being a little too emotionally involved with her patients.

Her home-life is shared with her uncle. After her mother’s strange death, her uncle appeared to raise her and care for her. A great man and a great character. (We should all have relatives like this guy). The only unfortunate part is that he holds a secret within him that could make Megan’s security fall apart. One night, coming home from work, she is run off the road by a stranger. In a millisecond, a mysterious, sensual man named Neal Grady arrives at her front door…a man she remembers quite clearly from her past. A man, that no matter what Megan does, can read her every thought and emotion the minute she’s having them.

Grady unleashes the secrets of her past and Megan is thrown into a macabre mystery that harkens back to a family who died hundreds of years before. She must use her incredible gifts to help Grady hunt down a log; a book that lists all of the people like her…before the vile man who killed her mother can find the book and use it to destroy not only Megan, but the rest of the "freaks" on the list. A wonderful adventure from start to finish. The chemistry between Grady and Megan is blissful and the character of Harley has to be one of the most charming men Johansen ever created. Enjoy!

Just finished Pandora’s Daughter by Iris Johansen, an author I usually enjoy. Unfortunately, there is enough cheese in this particular offering to top a dozen extra large pizzas.

The title intrigued me - Pandora's Daughter; I thought it would be about a woman with ties to the Greek myth. Then I read the back cover and there was danger and mystery. I had to read it. It turned out to be one of the slowest reads I've had done. It took me weeks to plow through the story.

Meinung: Wenn man bei diesem Roman einen normalen Thriller erwartet, dann wird man auf jeden Fall enttäuscht, denn es handelt sich eindeutig um einen Roman, der neben den typischen Thriller-Elementen stark mysterielastig ist. Ich war sogar ziemlich überrascht, dass dieser Roman als Thriller eingestuft wurde, da ich ihn ehrlich eher im Bereich Fantasy, als Mysterie-Roman gesehen hätte. Die Geschichte, die erzählt wird, ist jedoch auf jeden Fall interessant, auch nicht vollkommen vorhersehbar und in einigen Punkten recht spannend. Jedoch bleibt sie insgesamt relativ flach und zielt einzig darauf ab, den Leser kurzweilig zu unterhalten. Auch die Charaktere sind eher flach als plastisch, da die Handlung einfach so ausgebaut ist, dass sie einem zwar manche Facette vom Charakter vorstellt, aber zu schnell läuft um näher auf die Charaktere einzugehen. Insbesondere das Verhalten von Grady und Megan zueinander kam mir im Roman etwas komisch und an manchen Stellen auch unglaubwürdig vor, da mir ein bisschen mehr Erklärung fehlte, warum die beiden sich so verhalten. Auch über die Talente, die viel in dem Roman ausmachen, zumindest aus dem Hintergrund heraus, wird leider nur wenig gesagt, so dass man zu diesem Thema und vielen anderen Dingen nur oberflächliche Informationen hat. Jedoch gab es auch Charaktere in dem Roman, die mir sehr sympathisch wurde, jedoch waren das Nebencharaktere, die mir teilweise besser ausgearbeitet vorkamen, als die Hauptcharaktere. Was ich jedoch gut finde, ist, dass der Großteil der Charaktere nicht nur weiß oder schwarz ist, sondern beides ein bisschen. Spannung und die Handlung sind soweit interessant und vorhanden, dass man sich eindeutig unterhalten fühlt, auch wenn sie nichts Besonderes ist und Mysterie-Elemente leider nicht ihr volles Potential entfalten.
Alles in allem handelt es sich also um kein grandioses Werk, aber eindeutig um einen Roman, der einen unterhalten kann, wenn man nicht zu viel Tiefe erwartet und vor allen Dingen sich nicht daran stört, dass dieser Thriller auch auf phantastischen Elementen basiert.(less)

I have never read anything by this author, and the only reason I picked this one up was because it was a group read. I didn't even read the book description so it was a big surprise to me that it was paranormal!

This was an pretty good supernatural mystery/suspense story. The characters were interesting, the story was well-constructed and exciting, and if you like a paranormal twist in your suspense this one might be for you.

Megan Blair is a dedicated doctor who focuses all her energy on healing. She's also the survivor of a horrific incident in her childhood when a madman murdered her mother.

My aunt sent me bags of beautiful, well-kept hardcover books and this was one of the many. I was looking for something light and I got it. Far more erotically charged than I was expecting, I really enjoyed getting to know the main players who, for the most part, had some kind of psychic ability (or wanted to kill those with psychic abilities). It was gritty at times and very descriptive.

I just could not get into this book. It sounded promising enough - and oddly familiar. Through the first couple of chapters I experienced a peculiar since of deja vú. I don't remember reading this book before, but I would swear that I have. Despite this, I kept turning the pages in anticipation.

This book was not good. It wasn't awful, but it certainly makes me wish I had found something better to read. The plot felt incredibly contrived, and I really found the entire psychic aspect offputting. It also came across as really rushed, so while everything moved along at a brisk pace, you never had a chance to care about anyone involved. I tried to care; I did. The premise of the story was interesting enough. But the dialogue and character development fall off. I've read a previous book by her called Deadlock and it was way better than this one. This is the first Iris Johansen book I have read. I kept seeing books around my workplace with her name on them. She seems to be a popular author and the cover art/titles are so interesting. I was interested enough to pick this one out at the library. Now I see why she is popular. I found the idea behind this story to be interesting, as well as the characters. I was not sure when I started this book. It is about people with "Talents". Some know they have them, some resist and some the thought drives them crazy. This story is mainly about one girl whose mother fought Evil and lost, her main concern was to save her daughter. Ich habe nach der Leseprobe gehofft einen spannenden Thriller mit ein wenig Mystery zu entdecken. Im Endeffekt war es aber genau andersherum. Das hat mich dann doch etwas enttäuscht, weil ich bislang viel Gutes von der Autorin gehört hatte. Gestartet ist Pandoras Tochter sogar recht spannend. In einem Prolog verliert die 15-jährige Megan ihre Mutter. Einige mysteriöse Andeutungen werden gemacht, die mich damals dazu bewogen haben, mich für dieses Buch zu interessieren. Mit einem Zeitsprung geht es 12 Jahre in die Zukunft und Megan ist inzwischen erwachsen geworden. Sie ist eine gute Ärztin und hat sehr viel Einfühlungsvermögen. Thematisch ist das Buch also spannend, nur leider flacht die Handlung sehr ab und die anfängliche Spannung verfliegt.

Die Charaktere sind zwar nett, aber insgesamt zu flach geblieben. Für mich hat sich keine richtige Bindung zu Megan ergeben, auch wenn ihr Kindheitserlebnis natürlich schlimm war. Die Erklärungen zu ihrer "Gabe" waren für mich gut verständlich. Megans Reaktion konnte ich auch nachvollziehen, denn sie hat 12 Jahre nichts von dieser "Gabe" gewusst. So braucht sie einige Zeit, sich darauf einzustellen und das ist auch gut rüber gebracht worden. Immer wieder erfährt sie etwas Neues und baut zeitgleich eine Beziehung zu Grady auf. Diese Beziehung nimmt einigen Raum in der Geschichte ein, so dass die eigentliche Handlung ab und an in den Hintergrund gerät. Insgesamt wirkt der Thriller durch die Mischung der verschiedenen Genre eher unausgewogen, wo die Beziehung zwischen Megan und Grady sicher eine tragende Rolle spielt.

Ab und an gibt kleinere Spannungshöhepunkte, wenn Megan zum Beispiel von der Straße abgedrängt oder erschossen werden soll. Leider sind die richtig spannenden Szenen rar gesät. Die vielen Erläuterungen zu Megan, ihren Vorfahren und deren Gaben ist zwar interessant, aber meinst eher trocken geschrieben, so dass man sich schon durch einige Seiten quälen muss. Die Beschreibungen der verschiedenen Gaben fielen mir dann auch zu kurz aus, obwohl es ja darum in dem Buch gehen sollte. Ich bin in dieser Hinsicht schon enttäuscht, denn nach Klappentext und Leseprobe machte das Buch einen richtig guten und vor allem spannenden Eindruck auf mich. In der Leseprobe werden viele Fragen aufgeworfen, die zwar beantwortet werden, allerdings nicht die Erwartungen erfüllen konnten. Mit Fortschreiten den Buches geht die Tendenz aber immer weiter weg vom Thriller und immer mehr hin zur Romantik und Mystery, so dass mir zu wenig aus den Möglichkeiten gemacht wurde. Gut war zumindest, dass alles wichtigen Fragen geklärt wurden und zum Großteil schon eine nette Unterhaltung war - aber eben nicht mehr.

Bewertung
Auch wenn vorne auf dem Cover ein Thriller angepriesen wird, steckt meiner Meinung nach kein Thriller drin. Pandoras Tochter ist eine seichte Unterhaltung mit ein wenig Romantik und Mystery, aber die Spannung, die ich erhofft habe, ist leider zum großen Teil ausgeblieben. (less)

Psişik güçlere sahip olan Megan 27 yaşında dayısı ile yaşayan bir genç kadındır.. 12 yıl önce annesini kaza sonucu kaybetmiştir.

What we have here is a mediocre action/romance with supernatural elements added in that could have resulted in at least an entertaining beach read or something if it weren't for the god-awful dialog that plagues the entire thing.

The situations are frankly kind of silly, and it gets boring when both the good guys and the bad guys have contacts in super high places all the time that allows them constant access to planes and helicopters and other junk, but okay, the book's going for an action/adven...more
