I bought this book because the premise was fascinating: a severely mentally ill man going on a violent binge over what he plans to be the last 7 days of his life. Almost every page had something very graphic, thoroughly nauseating, and a bit exploitative at times, so if you are easily disturbed, you'd be better off leaving this one on the shelf. Experiencing Peter's illness, deterioration and disgusting urges literally turned my stomach at times, but psychosis ain't pretty. I felt like had to More...

I picked up this book because the title caught my eye. I do that a lot, and often I'm disappionted. But not this time. "The Seven Days of Peter Crumb" is a disturbing book about a man in the midst of a mental collapse brought on by terrible personal loss. He plans to kill himself in a week, but before he goes, he means to cause as much grief for everyone else as possible. I love the prose style, love the character, love the disquiet reading this book made me feel. Critics have co More...

Peter Crumb is not a good man. The 7 days of Peter Crumb is not a good book. I am unimpressed. The whole book, its like written, of course it is, in this faux conversation (you know what i mean right?) loose memoir note taking style, that just seems to go on and on. There is no plot. But then I knew that. So did he. Its funny how you do things. Without meaning to.</p>

Anyway, you'll probably get the idea from the above paragraph just how frustrating a read this book is - I laboured with it

The Seven Days of Peter Crumb by Jonny Glynn was recommended to me on Amazon after I ordered Friction by Joe Stretch and John Niven's two novels. I read a couple of reviews and it was likened to American Psycho which I enjoyed a few years ago so I bought it.

The central character is essentially telling the story of what he expects will be the last seven days of his life. The novel is filled with bloody murder, relatively well detailed and for seemingly no reason. By the end of the nov More...

I thought that this book was very interesting it kept me wondering about what would happen next. While I was reading I couldn’t really say what may happen next because the main character Peter was very random and crazy you could say. I kept reading because I felt like I was learning about something I don’t know much about and that would be having multiple personalities of some sort. I saw how his personality could and would take him and his thoughts over almost immediately turning into someone e More...

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. That is an honest warning for anyone who thinks they're interested. If you read this book and are horrified and disgusted, don't blame me. I told you not to read it in the first place!
That being said...
There are rapes, murders, and every sorts of perversion described in fearful detail on practically every page of this book. That part is absolutely disgusting.
The fascinating part of the story is that the main character has several personalities (one of whi More...

Please insert blood curdling scream here.
This book started out as revolting then became creepily fascinating. The main character has motivations that are completely insane yet they disturbingly become more sensible to you as you read the book.
The ending was amazing and I was really surprised at my reaction.

Bret Easton Ellis is my favorite author. With that said, this book has apparently been previously compared to American Psycho and for me the comparison falls flat. Glynn's novel is full of cringe-worthy monents and yet for me that is where the similarities end. The novel is another that it takes several pages to adapt to as it is written about one character from two different pieces of his psyche. For seven days we follow Peter Crumb through sex, murder, death and destruction, waiting his ev More...

It is clear from the onset that this book is not heart-warming or a particularly optimistic story; considering this fact it is not a bad read. My main criticism is the coupling of Peter Crumb’s demise on a very rare (and still relatively ambiguous) personality disorder/mental illness. This view seems to postulate an over-simplistic view of a complex disorder which leads to a multitude of crimes that are never fully explained. However, this ambiguity of the protagonist’s internal locus may aid More...

Uncomfortable but compelling.
I read this book in a day, it's well paced and well enough written. Although to be honest, I wouldnt have liked to spend much longer lingering over this brutal and unpleasant story.
Don't expect any real redemption or moral, any deeper analysis of the killer's actions. Jonny Glynn simply presents 7 days from the eerie point of view of the spree killer, Peter Crumb.

While some may argue this is just gratuitious shock for shock's sake, I think th More...

Pretentious, pretentious, pretentious. Glynn's writing is not strong, but pretends to be. I really wish it had been better. I had high hopes.

The blurbs say rash stuff like "the British American Psycho" or "makes American Psycho seem like The Lion King". Well, I just got my gruesome-ometer out of the cupboard and changed its batteries - the little red light is on so let's see... when I place The Seven Days of Peter Crumb inside the scanning device, and press GO.... ah yes, here we are.... 43.7 out of 100 on the gruesome scale. Now let's compare that with American Psycho...one moment.... I have to use oven gloves w More...

"Another chapter in a book where the chapters are endless and they're always the same. A verse, then a verse and refrain." - Aimee Mann

Urgh. This was just... bad. Obviously the intent is to initially shock and then reel you into the mind of Peter Crumb, but it just doesn't work. Jonny Glynn's writing is so slapdash and all over the place, and the whole thing is just grimy, messy and frankly, boring. If I was feeling generous, I would suggest that the slapdash nature of the book was de

The premise of this book was interesting - a man is going to kill himself in seven days, so he lives each of his last days according to a newspaper headline. This means his days were filled with abuse, murder, and drugs. Along with a traumatic incident from his past, Peter Crumb is struggling with an alter ego who convinces him to do bad things. He has many quirks - some are twisted, but some are endearing, such as telling the time by compass directions. The writing style, however, was hard for More...

In seven days time Peter Crumb intends to commit suicide. With each day that remains he will take a life in as cruel a fashion as his mind can conjour. It is quite clear that he is insane, this is evident from his obsessive inspection of his excrement and the fact that he is a brutal murderer. It had not always been that way however. As the tale unfolds, we find out exactly how the stable family man turned hateful sociopath.

On day one he does in the staff of his corner shop with a hamm More...

I was torn between three and four stars.
I couldnt put the book down (hense the four), but I felt that if I put up four stars, then people would get the wrong opinion of me. This book is really freaky, really graphic, and really psychotic. (Similar in vein to The End of Alice, stuff we just really shouldnt enjoy reading about) So I considered giving it three, but then I thought, to hell with it... it was a well written novel, and totally held my attention the entire time. Kudos to Jonny Gly More...

The Seven Days of Peter Crumb is one of those novels I'll pick up at the book store because I loved the cover design. When I took it to the counter, the clerk gave me a verbal warning about the violence in the book. I told her thank you, but that I would still like to purchase the book. Anyway, the book is quite gory, but not so much as Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. The novel's main character (I can't call him a protagonist) is Peter Crumb, who is dealing with a split personality: one pers More...

When I read the publisher's effusive praise yet noted how the Harper's representatives at the book fair seemed quick to issue warnings about the book's content, I knew this would be interesting to say the least. The shock of the protagonist's acts of violence, gruesome though they may be, wears off really, really fast when you become aware of how trite the content of this book really is. The double-personality theme comes off as annoying from the get-go, and simply becomes more so until the en More...

The character seems like an extreme gentlemen with the type or language he uses. His vocabulary is exception and the book really makes you think. Instead of just putting everything out there all at once it kind of makes you wonder why he is the way he is and gives you tools to figure it out while you're reading.

I'm not quite clear how Glynn wants me to view the character though. I don't know if he wants me to feel bad for this sick man or be disgusted by the things he does. It's a l More...

I enjoyed this book and how the book danced between the two sides of Peter Crumb. It seemed like halfway through the book it went from the point of view of one side of Peter Crumb looking at the other side of him to the opposite. I disliked the ending. I felt that it just fumbled to the finish line.

i was just glad this book was short. the story line was pretty lame, there was useless sections of writing that was there for no other reason than to prove that the character was wierd. it was a very short book that took alot of work just to finish. would not recommend this book to anyone.

Dark fiction is my forte. I loved this book. It was extremely, no holds barred violent, but it was a good premise and well-written. Though some might find it flight and slapdash, I thought it effectively portrayed the mind of Peter Crumb. His other personality was portrayed creatively.

Funny, intelligent, and very, very twisted. Crumb's matter-of-fact recollections of his horrific crimes make the reader disturbingly at ease with the same. Readers of Palahniuk and other black humor will enjoy.

To say that this book is disturbing would be an understatement. I have never read American Psycho (although it is on my shelf) but if it is anything like the story of Peter Crumb, then I might just skip it. I think I might need some light-reading for awhile. :)

This book is SO harrowing. Grim yet well written, you begin to feel sorry for Peter Crumb as he slowly slips deeper and deeper in to depravity as his schizophrenia slowly takes over his life. The murder and rape scenes are vile, you`ve been warned.

This book was totally crazy. Its a little hard to follow in the beginning but once it gets going its a real easy read. But throughout the book there is some VERY sick parts and a LOT of violence. This book is by far the most gruesome, psychotic, fun read ever. I strongly recommend this book if you like nitty-gritty, hardcore books.
