The Color of Law, by Mark Gimenez, a-minus, Borrowed from the Library of Congress, also available through audible.com, narrated by Steven Hoye and produced by Books on Tape.

I got given this book free with a newspaper (a free newspaper, actually.) I'm not sure anyone has really read this, even though The Times said he was 'the next Grisham.' And he well could be, you know - but Grisham isn't really my thing and neither was The Colour of Law, although I did still read it (and quickly, too.) It was entertaining, even though it's a) really rather predictable b) not incredibly well written. Still, although the characters are complete cliches, they are still likeable eno

This is this author's first novel and I just love his books. A bit like an early John Grisham - this book is another unputdownable read and a page-turner. A legal thriller but so readable.
Back Cover Blurb:
A. Scott Fenney is a Dallas corporate lawyer in the prime of his life. Raking in $750,000 a year, with a beautiful house, a beautiful wife and an adored daughter. Life could not be better. But when a rich senator's son dies in mysterious circumstances, Fenny is asked by t More...

I enjoyed this fast paced legal thriller. It was an easy read and hard to put down at times. The main character's transformation was heartwarming to watch, if slightly unbelievable. I appreciated the poignant "morale of the story," though some might find it trite.

It seems a pity to me that Mark, does not write more, his drawing of characters is great. In this book the main Character, a sucessful lawyer having to make a life changing decision (and I really mean it when I say "life changing")and a moral one.
The story is simple enough, a Black drug taking hooker is charged with Murder of the son of one of Texas's most sucessful businessmen, should one of the most up and coming sucessful lawyers take the poison challice offered?, you k More...

Bobby suggested this book to me and it takes me back to my days in the DFW area. So far it is good. It is an easy read which is what I currently need.

I REALLY didn't like the main character to begin with. Maybe not even for 100 pages or more. And might not have stuck with it had a friend not so keenly desire I did. But that's who he is, and that's how his life (and many others like his) is, so that's what we need to see. So, yes, I struggled with the first third, maybe, but read the last 240 pages or so this evening. It's about a lawyer, and a crime, but it's more about the people and how we can be led (or lead ourselves) astray. An entertain

This was an easy read with predictable encounters at almost every turn of the page but not a bad book. While it doesn't have the makings for a fully engaging, edge of your seat, two hour movie, the story might play out well for a 1/2 hour plot on a weekly criminal law show. If you want a quick, entertaining, not-too-deep, stereotyped story portraying the “life is not fair” scenario of a heroine-addicted-great-mother-accused of murder and defended by an altruistic, "life is still not fair” l

Riveting! Great glimpses into the lives of very rich lawyers and how their morals have changed over time. Finney has his eyes opened when assigned as public defender for a black prostitute charged with killing a senator's son--a senator hoping to be president. The senator, McCall, is ruthless, and his bodyguard too loyal. Before Finney learns that he truly wants to be a good lawyer--meaning do good--his job, wife, home, cars are ripped from him. But he returns to his old self--who makes his mo

I was intrigued by the title, but I have never seen a better example of the age old phrase "you can't judge a book by its cover."
I believe this Gimenez's first novel; so, I have to cut him some slack. His narrative through the first half of the book was sub standard, but followable.
What killed it for me were the constant lame anecdotes and "punch lines" randomly placed throughout the book. It seemed obvious that he thought of those expressions before he wrot More...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved it so much that I went out and bought a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. Which again another great book. Having read all of John Grishams books and Richard North Patterson, I was looking for another legal thriller writer, and I was not disappointed.
My only disappointment is that these writers don't bring out books quick enough

I only recently discovered Mark Gimenez and absolutely love his books. His heroes are great, lovable, honest and feisty. I have read all of his books now and would recommend every one of them. Sorry I can't remember which is which, so can't describe the plot of this one, but I liken him to Grisham with more humour. Wonderful reads, I urge you to try him.

I listened to this book on audio. It was the first book for me from Mark Gimenez. I did enjoy the book as well as the audio narrator. Definitely a legal book with the court case being the main premise of the story. I am reading his next book now (THE ABDUCTION) and I hope itis atleast as good if not better than this one.

I have never read anything by this author, but I plan to read more. Scott Fenney, a college football star, works his way to the top of his law firm. A judge appoints Scott to defend a drug addict, and his world unravels. No longer is he the high and mighty lawyer. Reminds me of Grisham or Isles and just as good.

It's a mediocre book on its own, kind of a low-rent Scott Turow novel with some cringeworthy attempts to capture urban speech patterns, but there are some heartfelt celebrations of To Kill a Mockingbird here (clunky, but heartfelt), and I gave it an extra half-star for the venomous critique of contemporary Dallas culture.

This book was just ok... found myself wanting to stop reading it several times. Gaping holes in the plot big enough to drive a Buick through. Wouldn't recommend this one for anyone who really gets into law-type books. Not very well researched or written. Too bad because the idea is a really good one.

This book was touted as "the next Grisham" NOT. For starters, it could have been at least 150 pages shorter if the main character hadn't reminisced so much about his football days, and referred everything to his football days; then if they didn't cry so much, leave the room cry some more, come back and cry together etc, etc. Way too many stereotypes and fairly predictable ending.
That's my opinion!

A good book and an easy read. Even if you don't know too much about legal proceedings, this book is easy to follow and the author does a good job in explaining how things work.
Although the storyline is easy to follow, at times I also found it to be a little too predicatable.
Overall a good book for a first time author. I would recommed it to people who enjoy the Crime genre.

Excellent! Great story by an author, new to me, whose future books will surely be on my 'to read' list. Colour of Law captured my interest within the first 20 pages and continued to the very last page - a skillful, clever tale, with memorable characters, a story with morals - a real page-turner! Excellent!

One of my favorite somewhat trashy books. Fast-paced and you can't help but identify with the protagonist, A. Scott. Interesting themes of inequality and the unfortunate remuneration of elite cadres of society.

I had to read this book for a class. The story line is o.k., but the author is trying to hard to be "hip" - I have not heard the word "honkey" since The Jeffersons. All-in-all it was a entertaining quick read.

A fresh alternative to John. Grisham. The story moved well mostly until the last few chapters where it repeated a few thoughts during the character development of the main character. Kept me glued to the end.

Easy read... very easy on the eyes and mind. Not sure if the author is trying to create the main protagonist or just another character. Read it if you must and want to better your reading speed.

My favourite mindless, holiday read. As usual totally predictable, totally one dimensional characters but a great, light and fluffy read that drags you straight in. The male version of chick lit.

GREAT BOOK. A PARTNER AT A PROMINENT LAW FORM IS FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIS ENVIABLE LIFESTYLE AND DOING THE RIGHT THING. FORMER COLLEGE FOOTBALL STAR SCOTT FENNEY HAS WORKED HIS WAY TO THE TOP OF THE HEAP AT THE DALLAS FIRM OF FORD STEVENS. BUT WHEN CLARK MCCALL, WAYWARD SON OF A TEXAS POLITICIAN, GETS HIMSELF MURDERED AFTER A BOOZY NIGHT ON THE TOWN, SCOTT IS ASSIGNED TO DEFEND THE PRIME SUSPECT A DRUG ADDICT NAMED SHAWANDA JONES. THE POWERS THAT BE WANT HER CONVICTED AND SCOTT'S FUTURE

Another courtroom drama - filled with implausibilities and sentimentality, but quite readable, though women are one-dimensional ciphers, and I cant really believe this is how a courtroom is run.

Got this book from the library because the review described him as the next John Grisham (whom I think is a brilliant writer) , I personally feel he as got J-G beat with this novel.
