I really liked the detail in this book – the way the author transports the reader to the deep South in the days right before New Deal social programs. The life she described was right on the cusp of change – very traditional, where everyone had their place and roles to play in the social hierarchy. The author is a keen observer and eloquent writer. I was just as pleased at her descriptions of the landscape, local music, customs, and people as her social observations.
