Good, but not as broad as I was hoping it would be. The book covered 4 in depth case studies of areas where Scandinavian countries are excelling and Australia...not so much: child care, education, unemployment and management of natural resources. The chapters went deep covering the development and implications of Scandinavian policy decisions over decades and the contrasting decisions Australia has made. This was interesting and, honestly, often embarrassing on the Australian side. But I wish ...more

I found a lot to like in this book, but then, I am the target audience (left-leaning, university-educated, Australia). The book goes into a lot of detail to demolish a number of free market economics articles of faith, and shows how other countries are handling childcare, education, job training and resource extraction more equitably and with better outcomes than we are in Australia.

It falls down a little on providing ideas of how to get from here to there, advocating a largely undefined increme

Well, I knew Scandinavia was amazing!!! :) A well written book, would have been nice to see things that are going well in Australia. 3 stars not due to the quality of the book, but because my basic knowledge was lacking in some of the areas to get the most out of it (taxation, unions and employment) and it felt too much like "homework". Section on child poverty and education are amazing though (clearly I got most out of these as they are areas of interest of mine) and yes free Uni is possible!! ...more
