goddamn ellen lupton and co are good at makin' books about graphic design. a total winner -- good source of inspiration and reminders about the stuff that seems so obvious once someone nudges you in the right direction. made me wish i had applied to MICA.

This is a great and modern introduction to many aspects of graphic design. Important book for beginning graphic designers. I like using student works as examples as they are easy to relate to.
A superb coffee table book filled with brilliant student compositions. Easy to look at. This is the closest thing I've found, so far, for interesting "how-to" graphic design books.
It's so non traditional my design teacher scoffed at what I was using as a resource. There are a lot of inspiring images inside, as well as good terms. I think he's just old school.
Love this book - fantastic modular breakdown of the major themes facing digital designers today.
I'd put it on a short list of must-haves for aspiring designers, but plenty here for the veterans as well.

Just got this book for graphic design class-- can't believe how crazy expensive it was, but apparently you can keep it as a reference book for a long time.
Borrowed from Lauren, features a lot of work from students at MICA (including my buddy Ellen Kling). Fun to browse for a graphic design fan.
A nice introduction to the major concepts of visual design. I only wish they hadn't used so many student projects as the examples. What do the pros do?
The new toolbox. Great.
I really like what this book is trying to do - move away from derivative artwork and into the raw components of composition. But I don't think it does it all that well. There were some really good chapters - great overview of colors, for instance. But other areas seemed less well thought out. I was also a little confused by the images they chose. Many were decent, but they were virtually all student art from the class that the author's teach. I'd be interested in a more diverse set of examples.
Great descriptions. This book is full of interesting ideas from which to build. Will use again.
The projects are stunning, and one would expect that coming from all MICA students. The text itself, needs help. I find the writing choppy and hard to comprehend. I think the project ideas are glorious, but was somewhat annoyed at the typical elitist tone in the book (again, one would expect). I wish this was better written from the standpoint of a beginning student.

Just picked this up on November 1st, did not realize it was written by instructors from MICA. Looking forward to what I get out of this book.
Superb. Not as timeless as Tufte or Bringhurst, yet as self-exemplifyingly beautiful.
inspiring. i love it.
