This is one of my surprise favorites on my daughter's bookshelf. It's not one I knew as a kid, and it's an easy reader, which are often misery to read aloud--repetition, short, simple sentences, no contractions, etc.
But this is a sweet book that holds my daughter's interest, while being funny and subtle enough to be a story that I like even after multiple readings. I also think it's cool to have a successful kids book with no kid characters. Our hero is an old guy, but not only that, h More...

Great easy read broken up into chapters for early readers. The illustrations made it a hit with my preschooler though. We are enjoying it as a holiday book at Christmas and I like the message of giving to others. We are going to look for other books featuring Mr. Putter and Tabby.

What would a true friend give a friend for Christmas if she was slowly killing herself with rock hard fruit cake? Mr. Putter is determined to bake a cake for Mrs. Teaberry. The problem is that he has never baked a cake and doesn't own a cake pan or a cookbook. After a trip to THE bake shop in town and one hundred dollars in supplies later, he is set. The only problem is that the multiple cakes he attempts are collosal failures. Staying up all night to make a perfect creation screams friendship.

I love the elderly Mr. Putter and his sweet cat, Tabby! In this story, Mr. Putter decide to save their neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, from the dreaded fruitcake (though she does seem to like it!) is so heavy it might fall on her foot and hurt her toe! So, he decides to bake a very fluffy, light, delicious cake for her. Only problem is, he has never baked a cake before! Will the Christmas spirit see this sometimes-curmudgeon through?

We've really enjoyed the Mr. Putter and Tabby series; I appreciate the series featuring senior citizens. We love the interaction between Mr. Putter and Tabby, as well as with Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke. The narrative is fun and a bit wry and the illustrations are comical too. We have read many of the books in this series and we were glad to find one with a Christmas theme to read now.

I don't know why I liked Cynthia Rylant as a kid. Her books now just seem okay or not very interesting. I never had tried this series that I know of. I don't like the messy illustrations. Some parts of the story are funny.

Mr. Putter and his cat, Tabby, decide to bake a cake for his friend and her dog. Best part: When Mr. Putter buys the the things he needs for the cake and he spends $100 before he ever buys the flour. Ages 4-9.

Mr. Putter wants to give his friend Mrs. Teaberry a very special gift for Christmas. His gift turns out to be a cake which he made but it wasn't so easy to do. Cute story. Fun for beginning readers.

This book was a good book because it is about something that I like to eat a lot. It is talking about Mr. Putter making a cake, and Tabby, who is helping him to make it. I think it is a birthday party.

A really cute tale of a man who wanted to bake a cake for his neighbor. A good book to read to the kids or a great book for a young reading to be introduced to chapters.

Great little Christmas story about an old man baking his first-ever cake as a gift for his wacky, old-lady neighbor. We enjoy all the Mr. Putter books!

MCL. I liked the part where Mrs. Teaberry liked coconuts made into monkey heads and salt shakers that walked across the table. And I liked that she liked dresses for her teapots.
Read to Aunt Anja.

What I want to know is if Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry ever hook up? They are so adorable together!

We love Mr. Putter and his fine cat, Tabby. This is one of their best adventures.

Something about this easy reader was really appealing to me - maybe because it was about cake? Regardless, I thought the fluid illustrations were engaging, and the story felt a little more interesting than many others of the same reading level.

I love these Mr. Putter books even at my age. He's just such a precious old man :)
