Stephen King, From a Buick 8 (Scribner's, 2002)

Most of us, at least among the Stephen King fans on the planet--and we are legion, much to the dismay of academics around the country--met the news of King's announced retirement with surprise and outrage. The man can't retire. Who could fill his shoes? Etc. And how could he say he's lost a step after, within the space of three years, publishing Hearts in Atlantis, containing 'Blind Willie,' one of his finest stories ever; The Girl Who Loved Tom G...more

The state police of Troop D in rural Pennsylvania have kept a secret in Shed B out back of the barracks ever since 1979, when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call from a gas station just down the road and came back with an abandoned Buick Roadmaster. Stephen King is the master of plot.
He can write a great yarn, replete with suspense, successful juggling of multiple storylines, and interesting and unique ideas. His problem is that all of this doesn't actually go anywhere. While he is skilled at developing a story, once he's finished it he seems to not know where to go.

A good example of this is "From a Buick 8". It's a decent tale: a mysterious car has resided in the back shed of a Pennsylvania state police station for decades, oc...more

This was the first novel of Stephen King that I've ever read. I'd seen his film adaptations and read a short story he'd published in Playboy in 2006, so I wasn't surprised very much by the artful mastery of language and steady pace of plot and character development.

I am such a baby when it comes to scary movies that I was worried about how well I'd do with a horror book. I'm as good now with haunted houses as I was when I was 8, which is...more

This is a novel that King created during a drive back home to Maine. He had stopped at a full-service gas station in Pennsylvania and almost never returned to his car. He wrote the book based on what would happen if he did disappear and his car was left there at that gas station. Of course King also throws in that the car has a mystical power. But that's pretty much a given. The story is well told, but not overly impressive. Sections are very good, but the entire book does not captivate ...more

My first Stephen King book. Not impressed. The story was mediocre at best. It was almost like he was trying too hard to get you interested. Kind of cliche leads into the next chapter, etc. Definitely not a page turner. I didn't really care what happened next in the story or to the characters. I read about 2/3 of it but planned to give up when my new library book came in. UPDATE: I did read the rest of it because my other book didn't come in. This book got a lot better (actually interest...more

You don't have a be Stephen King fan to enjoy this book. The plot was intriguing, the characters were likeable, and the story involves a true mystery. This is the kind of story that only Stephen King could pull off successfully. Make no mistake - this is not "Christine" revisited. This is a whole-new, remarkable story about a not-of-the-world Buick... but, not really a Buick. The story revolves as much around the complex lives of its characters as it does the mysterious Buick... that's...more

This one's on my list for 3 reasons:

1) I read On Writing and was intrigued by King's tale of how he came up with the idea for this book.

2) I went to school in Western PA. My husband is from Western PA. I frequently drive on the PA turnpike in Western PA to visit my MIL. Building a novel in Western PA (but not in Pittsburgh) is a feat I couldn't pass up experiencing.

3) My husband's a cop. King said he was allowed to shadow PA state troopers as research for his novel as long as ...more

Stephen King is a wonder. But then there's this book. The worst book of all time. This horrible book had too many holes. It was also remnant of another book of Stephen King is a wonder. But then there's this book. This has to be the worst book of all time. This horrible book had too many holes. It was also remnant of another book of Stephen's called Christine. I was mortified that he would have allowed this monstrosity to be published. There were no characters that the reader could identify with...more

Goody, another book about a mysterious car. Hey, Stephen King, quit recycling!

So it isn't exactly Christine -- the car itself isn't evil, per se, but it has a portal to another dimension in it or something. But it's still too close for comfort, and the dull opening doesn't help matters. I tried and tried to plod through it, and yet nothing.

I am an enormous fan of King, make no doubt about it -- but this is probably the only one of his books that I ever put down before finishing it. T...more

I was prejudicial against this book because I thought it was all about a car. But as it is a Stephen King book and he is THE MASTER, I picked the book up on sale at Borders at a third of the price so it was pretty convincing to at least get it. Then it sat on the shelf for a LONG time. I did read it though I don't remember when. It is by far one of the BEST books I've ever read. It's not his typical terrifying, nightmare-inspiring work that he is classic for. I recommend this book for every...more

I don't care what anyone says: I LIKED this book. A lot. As a matter of fact, I love Stephen King...no one can beat him when it comes to character development (arguably the most crucial element of any novel, if'n you ask me).

And even if he DOES lose his mind 2/3rds of the way through the majority of his novels (ummm, "Tommyknockers"? "It"? "Cell"? What IS Steve's thing with aliens, anyway? And no fair blaming the drugs, either...), it's always a way fun ri

This one was one of King's best in my opinion. It's been a few years since I have read it, but I do remember it being interesting at first, but then it just kind of stalled out in the middle. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen with the car, and nothing really did. I've read some other reviews, and I don't agree that this story resembles Christine. They only thing they have in common is the both contain an old car.

I like what King was trying to get across with this one, but it breaks my heart to say that I almost put it down midway through. I couldn't, though, because it would have felt like I was cheating on my favorite storyteller. (Silly, I know, but hey...) It was only in the last third of the book that I actually started caring about the characters. I did like, however, that King's monsters were secondary to the story.

A wonderful, thrilling, captivating story about the human curiosity and its price. The Buick itself is one of King's trademark truely genuine creations (I won't spoil you on exactly what it is) that's always fun to discover slowely. The characters are wonderfully human, the background realistic and convincing. This is one of my favorit King books and I highly recommend it!

I had onyl a few second to grab a book from the nearest shelf before my daughter diappeared amongst the stacks, and this was it. Not a typical scary King book, and it doesn't really come to a conclusion--although that's aprt of the lesson, that some stories/mysteries just never do resolve. For scary, stay-awak King reading, I'll lend you "Salem's Lot."

I liked the suspense and the cop talk. i hate the swears. it was totally unneccesary to read that garbage. but my husband edited it for me so i didn't have really read it but skip over it. overall it was very interesting and i wanted to know what was gonna happen next. i do like how the characters were so real life like.

Anti-climactic.
I read this a while ago, and I remember being really excited because it had just been published and was brand-new, and then I read it and was vastly disappointed.
There's basically an evil car with a portal to another evil universe in its trunk or something. Not very good, kind of anti-climactic.

I was pretty disappointed by this novel. Most of Stephen King's
novels are pretty tasty but this one fell pretty short of the mark. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters and the events in the book were only mildly interesting. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you really need a King fix.

Well this one was a little weird. Not that King is every really normal but this one went over-the-top a few times. It was good enough to keep my attention but at times it felt like it was just being strange for the sack of strangeness and not really progressing the story.
