Disappointing.
The stories are well written and in Bukowski’s normal vein; but the pieces lack the galloping pace and vitality I look for in short stories, instead they have the slow lingering pace of his novels. While I relish his novels, my expectations for short stories are definably different and these simply don’t measure up. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing this book. Anyone looking to read Bukowski should grab one of his novels or a book of poetry.

Bukowski is really funny and raunchy. His style kind of gets old because there is little variation. some wacky, dirty stuff happens to some fairly regular folks, or some wacky, dirty characters do some fairly normal stuff. no story is more than five pages and they all just sort of end with no resolution at all. but they read quickly, are good for entertainment and shock value.

A nice collection of Buk's shorts, but I'm sure that i've read some of the stuff in other incarnations (Ham On Eye, Factotum, Post Office). Nonetheless, entertaining.
It was good to see what Buk's writing is like when he's not writing about himself. The western one, the hippies going cross country... good things.
Go BUK!

If you can get past his typical misogynistic view and the macho b.s., these stories are entertaining, funny, and sad. The story "Guts" was by far my fave, and in my opinion, fully justified the $12 cost of the book at the used bookstore... but I like Bukowski and his melancholy tone. Not for everyone.

Awesome title.
The inherent eroticism in Bukowski's work draws out my catholic upbringing and makes me uncomfortable. I tould probably enjoy this much more if I where more comfortable with myself. this is not so much a review of the book as it is a review of myself.

great bukowski book.... my favorite story was love for $17 where the guy buys a manequin to fuck..... I think from now on I will only read Bukowski the moment I wake up from a hard night of drinking with a killer hangover!!!

I'm probably too often repeating myself with my Bukowski reviews. He trods familiar ground in this one, as he usually does, but still experiments with wilder themes of fiction than usual.

the first book of bukowski's that i ever read. my brother, of all people, let me borrow it. why he would let his 13 year old brother read this is another story...

The best Bukowski I've read. Darker than much of his other work. Perfect for reading while riding on the Greyhound Bus. Vulgar, gruff, sadistic, and shrewd.

My absolute favorite Bukowski book. I love his short stories more than I love his poetry.
