It's weird to be rereading this right after The Good Soldier, since Quartet is assumed to be about Rhys's affair with Ford Madox Ford (see When the Wicked Man for his version of the affair--out of print, though, so Rhys won?).

Her inability to defend and define herself independently became frustrating, as did her financial reliance on everyone else but that is more a product of the time than the character herself I guess.
