Emilio Cordova, a revered santero and custodian of the local church in the northern New Mexico village of La Cuenta has been found murdered and many people get involved in the investigation like an architect, Gwen Callendar, who's trying to prove the innocence of her boyfriend, Mark Wilson. Emilio's grandniece also gets involved as do some other family members who bring issues of drugs and land owership into the mix.

I enjoyed the portrayal of the gente in this little quaint village and the bios

Good! Interesting who-dun-it story, kept you guessing until the end. If you want to learn more about Northern New Mexico, this is a good book to start. Characters were interesting. Got to meet the author, she is totally awesome. Great book for my book club!

Particularly taken with the santero's remarks at head of each chapter. Besides giving a lesson in Lives of the Saints, the symbols used to denote each classic bulto are explained.
