Have you ever read a book you wanted to be great, but it just missed it’s mark? Wild The Pack of St. James by Noelle Mack has been that book for me. First, let me say that although I didn’t love the book, I did like it. I know that Ms. Mack needed to set up the plotline for her continuing series with Kyril’s brothers, but unfortunately for me it was at Kyril’s and Vivienne’s expense.

Wild The Pack of St. James by Noelle Mack has been that book for me. First, let me say that although I didn’t love the book, I did like it. I know that Ms. Mack needed to set up the plotline for her continuing series with Kyril’s brothers, but unfortunately for me it was at Kyril’s and Vivienne’s expense.

As soon as the novel starts, we are in what feels like the middle of Kyril’s and Vivienne’s relationship. I felt like I had started in the middle of the book, and that I had missed something important… like why they connected, and why their feelings were as strong as they were. Honestly, I felt kind of cheated when I read about them throughout the book. One moment they are thinking about consummating their relationship…the next they are in love, then they don’t see one another for a long period of time. What made them connect? What drove their attraction to one another? Why didn’t they communicate better with one another?

Please don’t get me wrong, I liked both Kyril and Vivienne. Kyril is a strong, handsome leader. He puts his pack first, and rules it with a firm but compassionate hand. He is interesting and funny, and I totally understood why the ladies and gentlemen in the novel were drawn to his self-assuredness and masculinity. Vivienne is also very notable in her own right. She has had to take care of herself in any way she can to survive. She is smart and likable, but somewhat naïve at times.

What didn’t gel for me is… when Vivienne’s life is in danger because of her relationship with Kyril, he felt like he couldn’t keep her safe, so he sends his cousin in his steed to take care of her. I know he wanted to protect her, but Kyril was the leader of the Pack…isn’t he supposed to be the one everyone relies on, especially when others are weak and in danger? Shouldn’t he be doing everything in his power to keep his loved ones safe himself, instead of sending others to do his job?

Kyril and Vivienne’s relationship definitely took a back burner in this book. Please don’t get me wrong, there are some great moments between them, but they are few and far between because there is so much else going on. I felt cheated. But, on the plus side the relationship Kryil has with his brother’s and cousin was wonderful. He definitely is a well-established leader and I enjoyed the camaraderie the men had between them.

Even though I was a little disappointed, I am still looking forward to reading the next book in the series. The world of the Pack of St. James is still interesting with it’s Russian culture and the traditions of the St. James werewolves. So, Wild The Pack of St. James was a good read, I am hoping that the next book Wanton, which features Kyril’s sexy brother Marko will be released in July of 2008.

As with other Noelle Mack novels, if you are offended by strong language and explicit sexual situations, than this novel if not for you.

I was disappointed. The story was interesting, but calling it paranormal, or shifter (because of the whole wolf thing) is stretching it.

Maybe I misunderstood somewhere along the line when I read the synopsis. I expected some shifting, men that turn into wolves or wolves that turn into men, or something in the middle. Instead, the only shifting the leading man did was partial, and it was 20 pages from the end of the book. Another character did a full shift about 5 pages later...and that was it fo...more

Shelves: paranormel

Not sure what I thought of this. Disorganized writing (I am guessing Mack does not write with an outline!) but intriguing concept of a "hidden in plain sight" wolfman culture that settles in London after escaping the Tsar. I think I would like to read another in this Pack of St. James series, but wish the author hadn't jumped about so much, as I was sometimes dropped into the story without prep. First thing: There are a few spoilers, but none that give away the ending, so I didn't choose to hide my review, but JIC, be warned.

Well at the moment I'm currently reading 39 books....the majority of which are so bad that I can't seem to finish them, but at the same time, are one's I'm not yet ready to toss in the towel for......So regarding Wild, the first book in Noelle Mack's "The Pack of St. James" the good news Is I made it the whole way through the book in under a day...but honestly, tha...more First thing: There are a few spoilers, but none that give away the ending, so I didn't choose to hide my review, but JIC, be warned.

Well at the moment I'm currently reading 39 books....the majority of which are so bad that I can't seem to finish them, but at the same time, are one's I'm not yet ready to toss in the towel for......So regarding Wild, the first book in Noelle Mack's "The Pack of St. James" the good news Is I made it the whole way through the book in under a day...but honestly, that's pretty much the most positive thing I can say about it.

The overall story was pretty good...but there are just so many problems with it. Inconsistencies, for one...For example, She meets the H's valet when she spends a few days in the H's home..then later sees him, and wonders who he is....um huh?

The world building is also only marginally touched upon and most of it’s a b it dull. We don’t really get into the Para side of things… at least not as in depth as I’d have liked. There’s little if anything about Alpha’s or pack dynamics or even mating (The Hero wants to mate with the h, but we never learn what that means!)

Next comes the story ideas that never go anywhere...Her dad tries to blackmail her, then tries to blackmail the H, but doesn't get his way, and then...nothing. We don't know what happens to him. We do know the bad guy is using him, but we don't know what ultimately happens to him. There's also a way the bad guy is using someone close to the Hero to do his dirty work, but then that never comes to light! (even after that particular story line ends!)

Then Ms Mack does this thing where she gets you excited about something that should be coming up...like oh the Heroine has a deep dark secret she has to share with the H. Or The H has to grovel for being an idiot or explain to her what being with him means. But instead of getting to see those scenes, she glosses over them: -Like when the hero ignores the heroine for weeks, and as far as she knows, he does so for no reason. So when he finally decides he can't take being away from her anymore, (and as far as the reader knows, he's only thought of her once through all those weeks he's spent apart from her) it's time for some groveling...or at least some explaining.....Sounds like it’d be a really good scene, right? But all Ms Mack says "It took two hours for him to convince her to come with him"...that's it. Did he grovel? Was it enough? Did he explain anything? we don't know!

Another annoying factor was that about 90 percent of the chapters start off “A few hours later” or "A few days later" or "a few weeks later" ...she skips so much! If it happened only once or twice, it wouldn't have been an issue, but almost ever other chapter starts off that way!

And then there’s the sex scenes... I had two major issues with them. One is the use of the word "Cunny"...I mean seriously? That's the best word you could come up with? And it's used throughout the whole freaking book! Then there's the fact that the heroine has a rod....um..huh? Does someone need a lesson in anatomy? Women don't have rods!

Okay….so I made it through the book. At least now I know I don’t have to bother with the rest of the series.
