While wandering at BEA, I saw many MG books that looked cute, so I picked them up, even though I don’t normally read MG. Well, I’m actually glad that I picked up Fashion Academy. I read it after being in a reading slump, and it was just what I needed to start reading again! It was a light, quick read that caused me to smile and laugh.

If you’re looking for a heavy, deep book, this is certainly NOT the book for you. But, if you want a book that is quick, just to put you in the mood for reading ag

Mackenzie (Mickey) has been addicted to fashion for as long as she can remember. An eclectic style sets her apart from her friends at school, but she’s got a head full of dreams. When she is accepted into the Fashion Academy of Brooklyn (FAB) with a full scholarship, she’s heading down the path to her dream of being a designer. BUT, sixth grade will not be without challenges: she’ll have to leave home and board with her Aunt Olive, a germ phobic and rather stuffy aunt, and make new friends in a ...more

"Fashion Academy" which I won through Goodreads/First Reads centers around Mackenzie Williams a sixth grader who has been addicted to fashion since she was old enough to style her dolls hair and dress them with her unusual flair. Wanting to be a designer "who colours outside the lines and thinks outside the box," Mickey is excited when she receives a full scholarship to the Fashion Academy of Brooklyn (FAB). But when she arrives with her avant- garde style, she's ostracized by smug Jade Lee and ...more

I thought this book was okay. There were some things that bothered me about it. 1) I think a lot of books/movies, especially ones geared towards girls, have girls lying to either their peers or their parents as an innocent, no big deal thing to get ahead. This girl lied by omission to her mom when she sent in the application to fashion school - and her mom was a little upset about, but acted like it wasn't a huge deal. And then she lied to her

Barbara
Fifth grader MacKenzie (Mickey) Williams has always been ahead of her classmates when it comes to fashion. When she is chosen to attend the Fashion Academy of Brooklyn, she persuades her mother to let her go, even though it means they will be separated and she will have to live with her stodgy aunt. At first it's hard for Mickey to fit in, especially since many of her classmates are so stylish, connected, and wealthy, but with the help of her new friend Javen Cumberland, Mickey reinvents herself ...more

This was a Goodreads book that I received. I read it in one afternoon, and I found it very interesting. This book was young adult fiction probably meant for middle school readers. The plot of being creative and entering the fashion world was very unfamiliar to me. The message of being true to yourself and your friends was a good point to illustrate to this age group. I am now going to pass this book on to my granddaughter who is in 6th grade to get her opinion.

My granddaughter told me she had re

I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. Thanks, I enjoyed the book and I like to know what's out there for middle grade readers.
Things I liked: Mickey's character, J.C., the lack of focus on body image, the focus on creativity, talent and hard work and being honest about who you really are. It was fun to read.
The only thing I didn't like was that there was very little mention of the other subjects at the Fashion Academy. There wasn't mention about having to keep up with homework or ex

A well written, quick read with an important lessons at its heart. Would make for a great Book Club book; a lot is left unsaid, in a good way, giving room for a lot of discussion on what Mickey learned during her first months at FAB.
