Faithful Women and Their Extraordinary God
By Noel Piper
The author begins the journey of five women missionaries’ lives by quoting Jim Elliot “Missionaries are very human folks just doing what they’re asked. Simply a bunch of nobodies trying to exalt Somebody”. That is the crux of this entire book. Mrs. Piper notes that there are many “ordinary” people who are willing to step out of their comfort zone into all kinds of dangerous places just to share the love of Christ. Mrs. Piper writes about the...more

Great book. I was encouraged by the sacrifice and daily walk with their God, the God Almighty. It showed the rewards of their daily life of faith. For instance, Sarah Edwards ... The legacy left by the Edwards family demonstrates the effect of a gospel-centered home. Over four hundred descendants of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards have been traced. Of these, fourteen became college presidents, roughly one hundred became professors, another one hundred ministers, and about the same number became lawye...more
I was curious to read a book first of all recommended by BSF and then to know the author is married to John Piper who is a great Christian writer. I was not disappointed. Even though the style is far away from great literature it is more a collection of missionary stories: it does a very fair job of illustrating 5 great sacrificial missionary female lives. I had heard and read about Gladys Aylward and Sarah Edwards but i discovered Esther Ahn Kim and Helen Roseveare as well as Lilias Trotter. Th...more
Alisa and I read this book aloud as we traveled to and from Wisconsin and found ourselves inspired and challenged by the lives of these women who poured out their lives for the sake of Christ and in service to others. The five women included in the book are Sarah Edwards, Lilias Trotter, Gladys Aylward, Esther Ahn Kim and Helen Roseveare. Although the life of each one was different from the others in numerous ways, they shared a common love for the Lord and a deep commitment to fulfilling the ro...more
I first read this book 6 years ago and just finished reading it with a group of ladies at my church. I think it was something about reading it with others but I got more from it than I did the last time. Either way it is an excellent book, focusing more on the extraordinary God than the faithful women whom God used in his kingdom. There are five ladies, most of them missionaries, some of them little known. The last chapter on Helen Roseveare who was a missionary to Congo was my favorite. Here's...more

This is more like 5 little books in 1 since they are mini bios on five ordinary women whose only claim is their faithfulness.
How wonderful!
Out of the five women my two favorites were Gladys Aylward and Helen Roseveare. I loved Gladys because you see how God can use people who do not seem to have "all the requirements," and I love how Gladys's approach was just.. all in!
I loved Helen because she was so honest about her sin, her constant failures, her burnouts... I could empathize.

I was greatly encouraged by this book. Noël Piper has done an excellent job sharing the stories of five ordinary women-Sarah Edwards, Lilias Trotter, Gladys Aylward, Esther Ahn Kim, and Helen Roseveare-who trusted in their extraordinary God as he led them to do great things for his kingdom. We are not cookie cutter Christians; God has a specific plan and purpose for each of us.
This book is made up of 5 different short stories of real, faithful Christian women - Sarah Edwards, Lilias Trotter, Gladys Aylward, Esther Ahn Kim, and Helen Roseveare.
Their names may not ring a bell like the names Britney Spears & Paris Hilton, but these women left an imprint on the world by their dedication to live an obedient, God-centered life.

This book shares brief biographies of five Christian women: Sarah Edwards, Lilias Trotter, Gladys Aylward, Esther Ahn Kim and Helen Roseveare. Noel Piper (wife of John Piper) tells their stories and then offers insight about how we can learn from their life and Christian example.
Piper's motivation for reading and writing biographies is Hebrews 13:6,7 "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the s...more

This book was a wonderful, inspiring read. It challenged me to examine my own faith, relationship with God, and view of others. Noel Piper doesn't necessarily do more than recount the lives of five women whose lives are documented well already, but the brief synopsis of their lives helps to encapsulate for the reader the things to admire and seek encouragement from in the lives of these women of God. It challenges any reader to not settle for the status quo in our lives. God can use us in ways w...more

I didn't think I would like this book at first because, I don't read many non-fiction books. I got through the first two ladies in a couple of weeks and then got to the story of Gladys Alyward, and WOW!! what an ordinary woman and her extrodinary God!
I recomend this book to any women who need to know that we may be ordinary, but as long as we are faithful to the Lord, look what He can do.

Noel tells the stories of five women who come to realize through their particular life stories that they do indeed have an amazing and extraordinary God. I could not stop crying through this book - the honest struggles they all share is real, but the way that they trust God completely in circumstances that I have never even thought of facing is extremely motivating and humbling. Great read.
