Alan Coren was consistently clever and funny throughout his writing career. This collection isn't necessarily his overall best, but I love the title (as did he) and the way he hides the reference to it as a test to the reader. Published in 1977, who then could resist his hilarious debunking of sexist attitudes in the article 'And this is the little appliance'? Any student of British humorous writing had better read the whole Coren canon; otherwise, there is a hole a mile wide in his scholarship...more
