Denise Swanson has created a likeable character in Skye Denison, but I frequently find myself wanting to smack her as she dithers back and forth between the two "love interests" ~ for someone who is clearly being written as strong and self-sufficient, she is an idiot where her love life is concerned. Maybe it's just my mid-40s perspective, but I'd have given both of those guys a piece of my mind a couple books ago. Skye comes across as fairly insecure where they are both concerned, and I'm annoy...more

See, right away on page 2: "Something abhorrent has haapened...." This coming from the mouth of a teenager? Come on, Ms. Swanson! Then a few pages later the "heroine" (lightly used term here), suggests to herself to fake an appendicitis so as to go home? Really? Ms. Swanson has to get her characterizations better than this.

The use of incorrect language pulls the reader out of the story. The behavior of Skye as a psychologist has certainly not been researched. As a thirty-one year old woman, she...more

You would really need to love reading about teens in beauty pageants to enjoy this book. Skye is still snooping uncovering clues as to why the most popular girl in school is found dead in the gym. The police chief still mad and doesn't trust her. Simon still unwilling to date her again because of her need to be Nancy Drew. Skye has a new boyfriend, a creepy teacher name Kent, who is sleeping with his students and one of his student's mother. There is nothing to like about Kent, accept to say he...more

First, I've read this series way out of order since I've mainly been picking them up at used book store and you take what you can find. So I already know what's coming up in the future for this series, though it's all a bit muddled in my head.

I can't remember what happened in book 2 that's made Wally such an incredible asshole. But Skye annoyed the hell out of me in this one when she just couldn't believe that Wally wouldn't share information with her.

Do we constantly have to hear about how sma...more

I'm not sure what's so appealing with this series, but many of us enjoy reading novels that are blessed with a real-time, small-town coloring. As always the sense of a small community is rich, where 'everyone knows your name', individuals have more power over certain aspects of the town such as law and school, and where your business is never just your own. I suppose this makes it awfully convenient for a budding detective, as almost every Tom, Dick, and Harry you pass on the street corner can p...more

This book was in the same vein as many others I have read. A nosy woman who would be arrested in the real world or murdered outright, and deservedly so). Skye Denison is a school psychologist who finds the body of a student on the stage of the latest high school play. She steals information, breaks into offices and noses around until she finds the murderer. The book is made of of very unsympathetic characters and I didn't find myself caring about any of them. This was not my cup of tea.

I liked this book a lot. The prom queen/cheerleader/star of play is murdered on the high school stage. The school psychologist is nosey and butts in with the encouragement of the chairman of the school board who is her godfather. What I like most about the book is the knowledge and insight that the author has into teenagers, adults, and high school life. Well worth reading just for that.

The star of the school play sleeping beauty is dead. Lorelei Ingels, cheerleader, beauty pagent queen the most popular girl in school. While the principal and the police are busy with the case. Skye Denison counsels kids and combs for clues. And even ever-optimistic Skye knows that , in this case finding the killer wonm,t end this tale happily ever after.

Murder of a Sleeping Beauty (Denise Swanson)
Murder/Mystery.This is the third book in the Scumble River Series. A teen beauty queen is found dead and school psychologist Skye Denison is on the scene. Plenty of suspects and secrets. Also shows how young girls are obsessed with their bodies and being thin. I also liked the behind the scenes views of the "pageant" world of competition and anything goes rivalry.

What fun! How can you go wrong with a hook like "Sleeping Beauty is dead!" This fast-paced book, the third in Swanson's Scumble River series, was a charmer. I read it straight through.

Didn't really understand why Skye was dating the drama teacher. The rest of the story seemed ok. This was an early Swanson book I read and I enjoyed it enough to pick up another.

This is the third and best of Denise Swanson's Scumble River mysteries for me. While I'm still not seeing Syke as a sympathetic heroine she made more sense and stuff in this one that she has to date. Interesting mystery and interesting whodunit.

okay so the books have gotten better but they are still driving me crazy. I really wish a lot of the original books questions were all answered...Do I really want to keep going? I did read this one in a day...

new author for me--it was decent.

Another great book in the series.

This was a fairly entertaining, quick read. I picked it up because it is set in a fictional small town in Central Illinois. There were a few things that bothered me, some unlikely dialogue (How many teenagers do you know who would say, "Something abhorrent has happened!" upon discovering a dead body? Or ever?), some too cheesy elements, but all in all, I enjoyed it for what it was: a fluffy, passably written mystery.

Nothing cozy about this cozy, i think this books shows how things really work at school systems, and truly it is a sad sight to behold...the manipulations with kids minds and the sadness of never achieving perfection, you know its out there...
Rebecca
I would have rated this one lower because of dumb Wally, but the whole teacher/student affair was original, not the concept, but Swanson's version.

Very well written, and the three muskiteers strike again, whoot!
