[AUDIO BOOK REVIEW]
I liked the idea of the plot and the subject matter (re: paranormal) but felt like the story lacked suspense and overdid it with the histrionics.

Several times the author went out of the way to have a character explain things that I just didn't need to know in order to enjoy the story. The expositionary dialog felt awkward (no one ever explains themselves like the last scene of a Scooby-Doo episode). To boot, the melodramatic adverbs and theatrical blocking act...more

One of the most entertaining writers is back. Looking forward to a novel by Ms. Johansen, to me, is a lot like awaiting the next J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts tome. Engaging, fast-paced…the woman knows what she has to do to bring a reader in for the ride.

The plot: For as long as Megan Blair can remember, she has tried with all her might to silence the voices that scream inside her head. She’s toiled since childhood to ignore the strange pictures that rise up inside her mind, like demons co...more

Just finished Pandora’s Daughter by Iris Johansen, an author I usually enjoy. Unfortunately, there is enough cheese in this particular offering to top a dozen extra large pizzas.

Dr. Megan Blair is a physician who hears “voices”. Often a sign of schizophrenia, in Megan’s case it is indicative of the fact that she is a “listener” and possesses psychic abilities much like her now deceased mother. This talent for listening is almost eclipsed by her highly developed sensual and sexual ...more

The title intrigued me - Pandora's Daughter; I thought it would be about a woman with ties to the Greek myth. Then I read the back cover and there was danger and mystery. I had to read it. It turned out to be one of the slowest reads I've had done. It took me weeks to plow through the story.

A woman, Megan, sees her mother killed when she is a teenager. Years later she is nearly run off the road in an attempt to kill her. Her past is revealed to her and she and Neal Grady go on a que...more

I have never read anything by this author, and the only reason I picked this one up was because it was a group read. I didn't even read the book description so it was a big surprise to me that it was paranormal!

I wasn't sure what bookshelf to put this one, because it had elements from both romantic suspense and paranormal romance. The basic premise of the story is that there are people in the world who have other abilities that are not "normal". Some are empathic, can read...more

I really enjoyed the books totally. I loved the unusual paranormal part of the book..and the connection between the characters really was excellent. I did have a problem also with the pass thoughts of Grady about Megan when she was 15 like everyone else.

************SPOILER***********************

Megan is a doctor and was still living with Phillip(her so call uncle) which it didn't turn out to be her uncle after all and she didn't care she loved him anywa...more

Pandora's Daughter by Iris Johansen was my February commute audiobook. Megan Blair is a doctor who hears voices. These voices are actually part of a psychic power that she only just learned she has. This comes at a time that someone is trying to kill her, and she must learn to accept and prevail, or risk losing her life.

The premise of the book sounds exciting and interesting, but it fell flat. The plot progresses really slowly, and the characters are just annoying.

My aunt sent me bags of beautiful, well-kept hardcover books and this was one of the many. I was looking for something light and I got it. Far more erotically charged than I was expecting, I really enjoyed getting to know the main players who, for the most part, had some kind of psychic ability (or wanted to kill those with psychic abilities). It was gritty at times and very descriptive.

However...the author wrote "Dammit" into her characters' dialogue far too often, I ...more

Recommends it for: my husband, romance novel readers.
It's a readable collection of tropes and cliches. The secret society (in this case family) of psychics which has been on the run from normal humans for centuries, and hasn't managed to set up a power base or attempt anything beyond protecting itself. The villain who is evil and sadistic, and has a cadre of hirelings and followers who are evil and sadistic in exactly the same way. The heroine who is a pretty-pretty-princess, beloved (or at least lusted after) by all she meets, who is tough as ...more

I just could not get into this book. It sounded promising enough - and oddly familiar. Through the first couple of chapters I experienced a peculiar since of deja vú. I don't remember reading this book before, but I would swear that I have. Despite this, I kept turning the pages in anticipation.

Only to be deflated.

Pandora's Daughter, no doubt a great book, just couldn't hold my attention well enough. Bits and pieces seem to be missing, as if it's an add on to an olde...more

Thriller story with elements of the supernatural. A group of secret psychics, all with different abilities, are racing to keep Molino, a drug lord bad guy (with no redeeming qualities unless it is his obsessive love for his dead son) from (1) finding the Ledger that records the family tree of a strong-strain of psychics and (2) killing Megan Blair to satisfy his lust for revenge (her mother "killed" Moino's son). The psychic angle intrigued me, since I'm a science fiction fan. Neal Gra...more

Although this took me a week and it's in large print, this is another great suspense thriller with a paranormal twist. Great action, nice intrigue and good romance.

This is a decent read. There is the whole business of the voices in Megan's head, others who come into her life with apparently strange powers or talents, and the whole mystery of her mother. The characters could be better drawn, and probably would have been if Johansen hadn't been going in the direction of romance and soft porn. As it is, she relied on that to move the story along more than I would have preferred. And certainly I could have done without references to the CIA and Special Forces...more

I like paranormal books with characters with psychic abilities. I finished the book and I enjoyed this book but I wanted more weight, more meat to it. I wished Iris Johansen would have given alot more information on the core Devanez family. That would be the jumping board where all the different psychic abilities germinated from. But on the whole I enjoyed this book it was an easy read. Now, that I have background on Megan I'm intending to re-read the 2nd book "Quicksand". This 2nd boo...more

I mildly enjoyed this book. The premise was good and I liked the action and suspense. But I never really grew to care about these characters. Well... I take that back. I really liked some of the supporting characters, but not the main ones. Which was too bad. Their characters were never fully developed and it fell flat. It's hard to read and entire book where the two main characters are in love, but can't stand to be around each other except to have sex. I kept walking away, wondering why I had ...more

I struggled to finish this book, as it was predictable, and the characters were poorly executed. Dialogue made me cringe and really, Johansen needs to try a little variety when it comes to swear words or leave em out because seeing "damn" or "dammit" at least once on every page was pathetic.

I've enjoyed Johansen's novels in the past, especially the Eve Duncan ones and have grown attached to Galen, Sarah, and the other supporting characters. Unfortunately, Megh...more

It's been twelve years since Dr. Megan Blair lost her mother Sarah, since she's seen Neal Grady, since she's heard the voices in her head, since her uncle Phillip Blair took her in. Neal Grady comes back into Megan's life when he finds out that she was run off the road and nearly killed by a mad man in a truck. Suddenly, she begins to hear the voices in her head again. She discovers that she is a Listener, her mother was a Pandora, and Phillip Blair, a man she loves and trusts, is not who she th...more

I'd never read an Iris Johansen novel until I received an email from one of the lists I'm on with an excerpt from this novel, Pandora's Daughter. By the end of the excerpt I was hooked and had to rush out and buy a copy to see what happens. I can only recall doing this once before.

Pandora's Daughter is the story of Dr. Megan Blair who was orphaned at age 15 when her mother was murdered. All her life she'd heard voices and her mother tried tell her otherwise. Megan had to be 'normal'....more

I’ve started the new year by reading meaningless fluff. I fancy myself a serious reader, but I’m also not a book snob and enjoy an occasional dose of popular fiction. One author I always read is Iris Johansen, so I looked forward to her latest release: Pandora’s Daughter.

Perhaps it’s time for me to find another popular author to follow. I became a Johansen fan because she creates a nice blend of mystery, thriller, and romance. And her novel The Face of Deception scared the pants off ...more

I was a bit bored while listening to this one. (Yup, listened to it on audio.)

Having the right voice for audiobooks is crucial; in this one, the main character was too polished and anchor-woman, so quite unrelatable.

The story was one I thought would be interesting, because, well, superpowers are fun to read about. However this book could be pretty much summed up as: vengeance, stubborness, and romance. The leading man was dull. Really, I just could not get into this book.

I couldn't even finish this book, it just didn't work for me. I tried, but it's too fantasy for me. I don't remember Iris Johansen being quite so out there. I think I must have read her earlier books, before she found her genera.

Either way, I wasn't into it and didn't make it past the first 30 pages. I don't like doing that with a book, just dropping it. This is only the 3rd time I've ditched a book.

Perhaps you'll like it, this one just wasn't my cup of tea.

Johansen began writing after her children left home for college. She first achieved success in the early 1980s writing category romances. In 1991, Johansen began writing suspense historical romance novels, starting with the publication of The Wind Dancer. In 1996 Johansen switched genres, turning to crime fiction, with which she has had great success. She had seventeen consecutive New York Times b...more
