Richard Laymon’s 1988 tale “Midnight’s Lair” was his 28th full length novel to be published.
The tale concerns a group of thirty sightseers who take an organised tour around an underground cavern named Mordock’s Cave. During their guided tour, the power fails due to a fire breaking out within the hotel that is located directly above the cavern. The cave is submerged into total darkness, with the tourists left stranded underground. Soon the storyline takes a turn for the more maca More...

what can i say? it's a richard laymon book. it's either perfect, or a piece of garbage, or maybe both, or neither... in any case, i feel like a junkie forever trying to recapture that first time; first time being when i read The Cellar with no idea what i was getting myself into... none of his other books have ever matched up to that, but that might just be because i got used to them... which seriously is a frightening thought. in any case, don't read this unless you're into rape and murder. and

A group of tourists take an tour of underground caverns named Mordock’s Cave. Then a fire in the hotel above traps them with a power failure, which is no reason to panic. The tour guides decide to look for another exit and when they break through into another cave, they unleash the psycho cannibals that live in the dark.
This was a creepy and wonderfully disturbing book and you can put yourself in the position of the scared tourists. Amongst the group is creepy Kyle, son of the hotel ow More...

Laymon can sometimes be a little hit or miss, but this one is most definitely a hit.A Fantastic premise, tourists trapped in caverns on a tour, but the back story of the location and the twisted family behind it bolsters the plot even more. Plenty of typical Laymon over-the-top blood, gore and violence, and a satisfying conclusion to top it off. A fabulous, trashy horror read, I loved it!

3.5 out of 5 stars. Yet another lean, mean killing machine of a horror novel from Richard Laymon. This one wastes no time getting to the scary stuff, and it keeps getting more twisted and insane as it chugs along. Not the first time I've read Laymon and said to myself, "damn, this would make a great movie." If you are frightened by creepy hotels, caves, and darkness, this is a must-read. Or maybe not, as it will scare the hell out of you! I would recommend reading this book with

Working in an enclosed environment - an underground cave system, converted for tourism - and ramping up the claustrophobia all the time, this is a gripping read. The monsters, perhaps, are a bit unlikely (I kept expecting one of them to say "Mind the gap!"), but not too bad for all that.

This book is like a B-Horror film, complete with oversexed horny characters, bad dialogue, and cheesy "monsters." I mean this all in the best of ways. Richard Laymon writes this tale firmly with tongue in cheek. He knows it's a joke and he takes us along for the ride.
Don't take it too serious, and you shall be in for a treat of B-movie "Slasher" type goodness.

This was okay, a page turner for sure. I find it hard to believe, as in many of Laymons books, how easy and quick people fall in love but it was enjoyable.

Somewhere underneath all the stupidity lurks a good idea for a good old fashioned horror story. Unfortunately Laymon does what he always does and piles on a load of cheesy dialogue and unnecessary sexual violence. Disappointed.

Creepy, gross and disturbing ... sounds like a Richard Laymon novel ... and yes it is!! Fantastic!

What a wild ride! Thanks to this book, I will never again visit a cave, let alone check into a motel by myself like Amy Lawson. Midnight's Lair is 253 pages of suspense and terror, a short one for Laymon, and just when I thought it was over... If you are claustrophobic, you might want to avoid this one.

fun in a cave. it's just laymon. is there alot more i need to say? it wasn't blind terror here but an intense story. ended a little quickly but i can forgive him for that... laymon is the best horror writer ever. period.

Pretty good. Good concept, a fun read. Laymon has some kind of rape obsession. All in all, not as good as his "the Traveling Vampire Show." But still, worth reading.
