Although fictional, the story of the brothers, Hoku, Na’ale, Opua, Makani and Manu featured animals unique to Hawaii on every page and a story that could have taken place. The Polynesian brothers explored and Manu found a friend in the Monk Seal and his friend would eventually save his life. There are scary parts but everything is okay in the end. Loved this book and it’s sure to please animal lovers. It even told the story in Hawaiin at the end, provided a glossary of all of the animals in the ...more

This was an interesting book on several levels. First, it was a Hawaiian folktale about how the islands became populated, beginning with five brothers, one of whom befriended a seal (dog-of-the-sea-waves). Second, it was an introduction to native Hawaiian plants and animals, many of which are unique to the islands and also endangered (notes at the back of the book explain this). Third, it was a look at the Hawaiian language, as the story was told in English with the pictures, and then completely ...more

Each time I read this book to my five year old son, it grows on me more. It is a truly beautiful folktale telling the story of the first humans that came to the Hawaiian islands. One of the brothers in the story is homesick, but helps to save an injured seal who becomes his friend. When the brothers set sail to return to their home, they meet an unexpected challenge and the seal pays them back for their kindness to him.

The story isn't the only beautiful part of this book. The watercolor illustr

This is a nice story about making new friends and giving new places a chance. The back of the book has some great info about the islands, native animals and the Hawaiian language. The whole thing is illustrated with watercolor and crayon and you really see a lot of personality in the animals and people that he portrays. Rumford is a master at paying homage to the cultures and people that inspire his stories.

It was a simple story about brothers who like to travel and they discovered islands off of the mainland of Hawaii. One of the boys befriends a seal that they call dog of the sea. They become best friends and later during a volcano/earthquake the seal saves his life. I like because in the back of the book it has informational pages and it has the story written in Hawaiian.

This was my favorite of the Hawaiian books we read. It had a glossary of animal and plants in the back, along with a map of the whole chain of islands. It was a story about some of the first explorers to come to Hawaii, so it also covered how the islands were formed and how life came to grow there.
