Scotch Broom is volume 3 of the author’s MG/YA series The Witches of Galdorheim, which relates the adventures of a teenage witch named Katrina, or Kat, and her half-brother Rune who live on a magically transformed island in the Barents Sea, north of Russia and Scandinavia.
Katrina is about sixteen now and is going to Stonehenge for her Winter Abroad, something all young witches must experience on their own. Her younger brother Rune, a half-vampire, is being sent to visit his father in Transylvan

If you don't like books with self-sufficient and adventurous heroines who would rather travel than be in a relationship with some irresistable "hawt boy du jour", Scotch Broom will not be for you. For those of us who love intrepid heroines who get themselves into and out of scrapes, the third book in Marva Dasef's Witches of Galdorheim series is a treat and proves that not every book with a strong heroine needs to be a romance.

What really stood out for me was this conversation:

Ms. Dasef does it again for the third in her series.
Kat is growing up and she’s taking her promised graduation trip—alone. Although her magic still isn’t up to par, her wit shines through. With her half-brother Rune following behind her to make sure she is safe, they both get into trouble once in the otherworld where magical creatures abound. Who can she trust?
This book teems with Ms. Dasef’s imagination and her research into mythical characters, plus her wonderful style of writing. A book for a

Scotch Broom is Book Three in the Witches of Galdorheim series. Kat’s older now – in fact, she’s graduated from school and is embarking on the customary graduation trip to the outside world outside. She decides on Stonehenge, and sets off for it via Scotland. Half-brother Rune is off on a trip too, but he’s not nearly as thrilled about it, and decides to veer away from his designated destination and follow Kat. This pleases her not at all, but the siblings have to put aside their animosity when ...more

I was looking forward to the third book in The Witches of Galdorheim series and didn't get disappointed. Marva Dasef once again created a wonderfully charming adventure set in a world filled with mysterious and enchanting characters. Kat and Rune both faced quite some challenges. Throughout, I enjoyed the little homages to other brilliant works of fiction from Alice in Wonderland to Hansel and Gretel. Great slivers of fun sprinkled into an otherwise high-tension story.

Scotch Broom is a great finale to a great series. This was so much fun to read. Mrs. Dasef grabs you from the first page and doesn't set you down again until the very end. Fantastic world-building and great characters bring this story alive. I recommend reading the whole series!

I spent 35 years making a lot of money from writing. Probably more than most authors earn in their lifetime. But that was writing technical manuals and documentation. What that experience did was teach me how to write. This is not something many other writers
