Her fool brother had gone and lost his half of the family ranch in a game of cards, leaving her to live with her brother's mistakes, and handsome cowboy Mr. J. T. Flannery. Then trouble struck the ranch, and Chloe had no choice but to accept J.T.'s offer of marriage--no matter how inconvenient!

The only thing the stubborn beauty wanted less than a business partner was a hus

I have had fond memories of Carolyn Davidson's romances. She was one of my go-to authors when I read an American West story years ago. Mrs. Davidson published many of her books from the 1990’s through 2010. Like Cheryl St. John, Dixie Browning, Diane Palmer and Judith Stacy, each author had a particular style of writing that appealed to the emotional side of her readers. They still have a core group of devoted fans but, now, Kaki Warner and Ellen O’Connell are the popular writers of this genre.

This is the first Carolyn Davidson book I've read, and I was so impressed that I have ordered more. The beginning sparks the interest with a poker game between Peter Biddleton losing his half of the ranch to J.T. Flannery in a poker game. From there, we go to Chloe Biddleton, Peter's twin sister, who owns the other half of the ranch which is in Ripsaw Creek, Wyoming. Understandably, Chloe is upset when J.T. arrives to claim his half of the winnings, and the chemistry between them sparks immediat ...more
I have been particularly disappointed in the books I've been reading recently. And I would say it's just me that's the problem, only I'm pretty sure it's not :). The thing is, I've been taking a chance on older books and many of them are not living up to my expectations.

"A Marriage by Chance" started out as very standard western fare, right down to the no-good brother, but good fare nonetheless. The characters and emotions are well thought out, even if they are cliche. The hero is this arrogant

★★★★✩ Ah, yes. A reckless brother who loses his half of the Wyoming ranch in a game of poker, saddling his hardworking twin sister with a seductive new partner. It’s been done before, but Ms. Davidson has a few tricks and surprises up her sleeve. Her books may be a little dated for some of you, but I quite enjoyed her – enough to track down her backlist and start this first in the Davidson's Texas series. Sweet, but not too sweet! It comes wit
This book was a good read but it did not live up to my high expectations. I have read many marriage of convenience/western romances and so there are some better ones out there. Pete, the heroine’s brother is a good for nothing, he gambles and ends up losing his half of the ranch (co-owned by his sister as their father has passed away) to J.T.Flannery. J.T has been looking to put down roots and so heads off to the ranch to claim his wining by being a business partner and helping run the ranch. Ch ...more
Chloe Biddleton has a quite a suprise coming with JT Flannery show up on her ranch. He's recently acquired the rights to half her ranch...winning them from her scalawag of a brother in a game of cards. It would be an understatement to say that the Chloe, who has been running the ranch since her father's death, is furious. As the two are trying to get used to their new business arrangement a gang of cattle rustlers show up and starts stealing thieves from several of the ranches in the area...incl ...more

I read this book for the A Book A Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay challenge. 7–Lucky Seven. Read a book where a character is extremely lucky or a book about anything game related (gambling, bets, poker night, drinking game, you get my point). In the Old Testament, 7 is the number of days it took for God to create the world. Read a book with a tight deadline.

This book starts out about a brother and sister who own a Wyoming ranch together. The brother is a rather dissolute gentleman (or that's what w

The writing in this is not as strong as some of Davidson's books. The heroine appeared petulant and bratty because so there often no rationale reason for her feistiness. The hero also lacked cohesiveness. Despite that I enjoyed the story and would recommend this to someone looking for a light read.
Gambling, recalcitrant brother, partners v's domination, rustlers, kidnapping and a couple of weddings all make it a good tale. However, I felt little emotional connection with the characters which was odd as several upheavals happened. Even now at tales end no fluttering.

Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.

She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashi
