a good book. He spent a lot of chapters talking about false revelations which I thought was good because that doesn't get covered very often. I also felt like I came away with a few solid principles about how true revelation is given and received. And I would especially recommend it for those who are looking to be married in the near future. He had some segments devoted just to making this decision.

It took me a long time to read this book...because I was doing so much thinking and pondering and listening while I was reading it. I think it's a fabulous book. I wish I could give it 12 stars! Bro. Lund's organization is amazing...he lays out the process of personal revelation so beautifully. I found so much to learn and insights came that deepened my understanding of so many things. I underlined heavily and this book will be a continuing reference book for me. I absolutely loved the wealth of...more

I liked this book. Gerald Lund does a good job at explaining in detail the process that we need to go through to seek, ask, and then hear. Personal Revelation is so important to us today. I found that I already knew many of the principles in the book, so there was not a wealth of new information for me. But, it was a nice reminder of things I need to be doign.
There was one thing that I did not totally agree on fairly early in the book. So, I think this effected how I felt about the rest on the...more

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It was that good. I would recommend it to all my LDS friends.

This book would have been extremely helpful to me as a missionary. It would be a great gift for someone getting ready to serve a mission because there is so much in here I wish I really understood at that time in my life. I think in my mission there was a lot of incorrect doctrine floating around about the way the Spirit works and the way we receive answers to prayers.

I loved the way this Lund discuses the "mechanics" of personal revelation in this book. He has a very concise outline that he goes through, beginning with what revelation is, how it comes, what principles govern the giving and receiving of revelation, false revelation and then ends with discussing how to increase "the likelihood of receiving and recognizing revelation". I did got bogged down in the last few chapters but I think that may have been because there is so much to think about through o...more

I think this is one of the most helpful church books that I have ever read. It would be an excellent resource for a home gospel library; I read it on an inter-library loan, but I'm planning on buying it.

Several reviewers comment that there is nothing new in this book, and they are probably right, but it is all gathered into one place, put in a very logical order, written very clearly, backed up with scripture and quotes from the prophets and explained very thoroughly with examples. If you have e...more

This probably would have been a four-star book if I had read it over the course of the six weeks it sat in my bookcase, as opposed to in one fell swoop because it was due at the library. It's a lot to take in when you read it in one sitting, and I don't think I'll really apply everything since I don't think I'll remember everything. It's good information, and I did learn some new things from it, but it's not like there's going to be a ton of new information in a book on personal revelation, beca...more

I didn't realize how much I was looking for a book on personal revelation until I read this book! I love the layout of this book. It is concise and specific in how to recognize revelation, how to recognize false revelation and how to be worthy to receive it. I thought I knew most of that but I hadn't seen it presented quite like this. Lund uses a nice combination of real life stories, examples from the scripture as well as quotes from current and past church leaders. I guess the best recommendat...more

I'm not finished, and I read just a chapter or a few pages nightly to lift my spirits. It's like reading scripture, it helps me think of Jesus Christ and staying close to him and his teachings. I enjoy reading it every night just before I go to sleep. It's a book to mark your favorite passages and thoughts. It's a book that makes you feel good.
Now that I'm finished, I want to read it again sometime. I loved the message of this book. I have always believed in communicating with my Heavenly Fat...more

Although much of this is information that we all "know," about receiving revelation, Lund draws together a wealth of materials from leaders in the Church and crafts a wonderful book that is practical and insightful. There is something here for every reader who wants to strengthen their ability to recognize personal inspiration in their own lives. I especially loved his section on developing spiritual self-reliance in these times of turmoil and "noise" as well as the insights offered about the pa...more

I was really hoping for a definitive statement of "When such and such happens you know the Lord is speaking to you" which isn't in this book. So I was disappointed in that but, of course, listening for the Lord is not that easy and is very personal so there are lots of ways it happens. Gerald Lund gives lots of points to help us focus and work on our spirituality as well as pointing out lots of pitfalls that take us away from where we want to be. This is not a quick read and takes lots of though...more

Eighteen Months after I started reading this book, I have finished and finally feel like I can offer a "review" on it. It wasn't that the reading was laborious or taxing; it was more that I re-read things over and over. I tried to take them into my heart. And sometimes that takes a while.

A few years ago one of my dear friends lost a child. One night, shortly after the accident, she related an awful experience she had in Relief Society. The lesson was on the Holy Ghost and there were women sharin...more

Unless you are looking for a boring explination of revelation that repeats itself many times do not purchase this book. There is nothing new presented. If you would like a reference book just for the topic of revelation then buy it but you can always find information from other sources. The book reads slowly and Lund kepts repeating himself and doesn't get to the point. I was bored to tears reading this. I dislike it so much I am debating if the book deserves space on a bookshelf.

this book is sexxxxxy. i love mysteries, understanding, realizations {truth: revelations} based on christ, brilliant apostles of old/new, and the sacred, amazing gift that is for all to subtly experience personally. my inner snob wanted to discount gerald. he is a terrible writer. but he is pure genius in so many other ways. which is why this works for this topic.

the below was written a million years ago. i have been savoring this book for a really long time as part of my scripture study. it is...more

An incredible read for anyone who has a desire to better discern what the Lord is telling them. I gained some real insights into how to recognize personal revelation, how to make myself more receptive to revelation, as well as the principles that govern proper revelation. I read this in conjunction with my Personal Revelation Institute Class and had an incredible experience. This is one where I'm sure I'll go back and read again and again.

I picked this book up several months ago and read the first couple of chapters and didn't pick it up for a year or so after that. After the first couple of chapters, this book is an absolute goldmine! It is very comprehensive and answers about all the questions a person would have about personal revelation. I love the stories and experiences he puts in the book, and also all the quotes from prophets and apostles on the subject
Jennifer
I loved this book. It started off repeating many basics I was already familiar with but as I moved through the book new and very interesting points were brought up. Of course it was always the stories thta went along with the doctrine that helped me understand the points he brought up. Aside from the book fulfilling the title, I often shut the book with the overwhelming feeling of how much God loves his children.

This is a very enlightening book on learning to listen to the Holy Ghost and receiving personal revelation. Elder Lund covers every aspect of learning to be in-tune, what forms revelation can come in, how to tell if it is really from God and how to increase the amount of personal revelation we receive. I've recommended this book to 4 people before I even finished reading it!

Great book in helping identify when the Lord is really talking to you. The scriptures are full of stories of angels talking to people, or people having visions, but it's not like that for me or most people. This book gets down to the details of how you can know if you are being prompted by the Lord, or if those feelings are the late night Taco Bell.
Andrea
My favorite part are the many stories he pulls together to illustrate his points. Nothing surprising in what he is teaching about personal revelation--all very basic doctrine, but nice to see it all gathered in one place. I disagreed with a few of his observations, but on the whole I thought it was a useful review.

This book was very easy to read with a lot of very valuable everyday advice on how to keep the spirit in my life. I could re-read this several times and learn more and more. After reading it I realized how many wonderful books there are out there to read. I need to be more selective. Great Book!!

For those who are seeking spiritual guidance, this is a rich and engaging book. It sets an outline and follows through well. It is full of documentation and examples. For those wanting to recognize the hand of God in their lives, this gives some clear understanding and thoughtful direction.

I read this awhile back but forgot to enter it. This is really a great book for people who want to improve their ability to listen to the Spirit. It is a book you will want to read over again. It made me pay more attention to the promptings I get and to try to act on them more.

This book was great at helping me understand the Parable of the Ten Virgins, and learning the importance fo living in a way that invites revelation into our lives. One of my favorite quotes:

"We kneel to talk to God, we open the scriptures for him to talk to us."
Morris
Good on different manifestations of the Holy Ghost, but could have been shorter. He starts saying the same thing in different ways. Good quotes by prophets and general authorities on the subject addressed in each chapter.
Rebekah
I think this is a worthwhile read for anyone who has questions about answers to prayers. (And I seriously doubt those of you who don't have questions wouldn't benefit from reading it anyways). It talked about a lot of things that I already knew, but it was enlightening, and talked about many things I DIDN'T know as well. Reading this did not necessarily tell me what the answer to my prayers were, but it helped me to recognize what to look for, and it helped me to realize I had some false beliefs...more

Nothing earth shattering or new, which is a good sign that he is on safe ground. Just a very doctrinal study at an absolute truth. God talks to people today. I am better after reading it.

great quotes and scriptural references. goes out of its way to debunk the stupid ideas some mormons have about personal revelation (like praying about which brand of detergent to buy)
Tony
Great. If anything this book pulls together many quotes from prophets and apostles so that the reader can get a broad range of how the Holy Ghost works and speaks with us.
Candy
Excellent treatise on a very important topic. Nothing new or unusual, which means he is on safe ground. Well documented and thoroughly explored. Would recommend to anyone.
