You: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body That Will Make You Healthier and Younger
Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic sy

This is a handy manual containing a potpourri of all sorts of information about the human body and its various systems and organs with the latest advice about how to keep them all healthy. Drs. Roizen and Oz write with the same down-to-earth style and whimsical sense of humor that each shows on his various TV appearances. The book has two quizzes--one with 50 multiple-choice questions about the body in general and the other with questions that help challenge the human brain and ward off senilit...more
A very readable introduction to the systems of the body and how to take care of yours and increase your health and reduce aging processes. Includes a healthy dose of humor and many suggestions for diet and dietary supplements, as well as a recipe section and a crib sheet on exercise. This would be a good introduction for folks on how the different systems of their bodies work – especially people who are confused by medical jargon. This is easy to understand and fluidly written. HOWEVER, ther...more
There are countless self-help books ranging from diet, exercise, psychology, and the like. One of the authors has really taken advantage of this new found fame, Dr. Oz, and leads me to some skepticism regarding future pronouncements. Yet, most of the advice and info in this book originates from sound, proven scientific data. Most of the data herein is the culmination of hard evidence based on theory, model and proven in labs, and the anecdotal experience by two of the nations foremost physicians...more
As much as this book annoyed me, I think it is a decent read and reference point for certain audiences.
The author tried too hard to be funny. The forced humor and obscure metaphors, with few exceptions, were out of place and detracted from the overall quality and content of the book.
Serious consideration should be taken when identifying an audio book's narrator. This audio book had two narrators; one with a mild speech impediment. While I have nothing against peo...more

This was a great book to listen to while running because it motivated me to keep going! (Even though he says excessive running is bad.) I felt pretty good about the things I eat and the exercise I get in general. However, I feel like I can always do more and improve more. I did feel kind of overwhelmed with the balance of foods your supposed to eat and couldn't really mentally figure out how to get it all in. I don't feel like the website is very clear on that either. All in all, I think t...more
I love all the 'You' books--especially the 'smart patient' one--I always learn so much!
Interesting book that gives a lot of useful information about health, your body, and staying fit, healthy, and young. Seems like authors couldn't decide whether they were writing to a) people older than 40, or b) middle schoolers. As a result the tone of the writing seems a bit patronizing to the point where it is difficult to stomach in spite of how interesting the info might be. I wouldn't buy it, but it could be a good book to check out from the library if nothing else to explore some aspects...more
You: The Owner’s Manual is a general health and wellness book. The book goes through all of the major organs describing functions, problems with, and how best to take care of. It was written not to be on the cutting edge of health science but more of a health for Dummy’s book. It did all this and even through in a little humor along the way.

*&^#*&%$*!!! What did I push? My review was like, done, and I hit a bad key and everything reverted back to my old review that was written here, before I read the book. HOW DO I UNDO IT WHEN I SCREW SOMETHING UP LIKE THAT? Maybe I'm just on edge. I have a 5 year old and 3 year old here on my couch, and every three seconds they ask me a question like, "What kind of food does your cat eat?" or "Do you know how to tie knots?" It made it very hard to focus enough to write anythin...more
I listened to the audio of this book, and I was getting frustrated because there were so many milligrams, micrograms, and international units of this or that mineral or vitamin or acids that I should take on a daily or weekly basis, that I should be noting down - but, being on the move listening on the go to this audiobook, I couldn't very well easily do so. So I felt the nuggets of golden secrets to lasting health slipping away from my grasp one after the other as I heard them come one after t...more
I FINALLY finished this book. I read most of it pretty quickly, and then I just got bored and took a million years on the last chapter. This is a pretty good basic general health book. So basically, if you don't know much, then this would be a good reference book. I do like that there is a plan that they include of living a healthy lifestyle and they even include recipes. I haven't tried any of them, but maybe someday I will. One thing that really annoys me about this book is that they try...more
I enjoyed this book much more than I anticipated I would. I read to help in my preparations for an exam at school. I tested out of some credits and used this as part of the study material. It worked; I passed! There is a lot of information in this book that I should know but that I don't know-or didn't, anyway. The subject matter is presented in a way that keeps it interesting all the way through. I'm glad I finally had a reason that compelled me to work through this and now I'm even happier tha...more
ood informational read about your body. I didn't read this cover to cover, rather read the parts that I felt most applied to me (mainly because the book was due to expire on my Nook and there wasn't time to read it all). He makes some really common sense tips about exercise. I love the theme of trying to extend your Real Age so you can live a longer, healthier life. Great information for someone who just wants to know how your body works and how to maintain health.
I listened to the abridged version on a trip. I would probably get the full version at the library. Lots of information about our human bodies, and how to take care of ourselves, to live a longer and healthier life. It was hard to absorb all the information on audio--but it was very interesting. All the usual things about diet and exercise, but they really went into all parts of the body, and how each part functioned.

For the most part, I thought this book was excellent. How each part of the body works was broken down in easy to understand terms. Most of the book was very funny too. There was also a lot of good information, a lot of which I did not know. I've been going around to everyone I know and telling them some of the things I have learned from this book, although a lot of the book was common sense.

This was an OK book. I have many other books that I use instead for any health-related questions. There were helpful diagrams on the body, but really nothing new here that I learned. Plus one of the author's was a bit annoying; he tried to add humor throughout the book and I didn't love that.

i purchased the first edition of this book. fell in love with it, b/c it walks you through some "common sense" items in a no nonsense way. thank you to the authors for writing it in a fashion that we non-physician folk can understand. and yet, not making us feel like idiots.

not new information for me, but it's good to refresh the things I should be doing for a healthy body. I need to work on strength training and aerobic activity, watch my sugar intake (ugh) and stay away from those corn dogs! Now I know where the term boner comes from...talked with Janea Little from Chippewa Nature center to verify.
These authors are great. They really help you understand your body and its inner workings, in a very informative, yet casual and fun way. As with "Diet," the silly jokes will have you groaning, but at least they aren't boring. Lots of practical and really useful info.
While somewhat corny, I really enjoy reading a chapter or two. My knee joints started hurting (I'm too young for arthritis!) and was very intrigued by the chapters on joints and muscles. Hate the drawings, but that's just the more practical side of me.
Everyone should read this amazing book! It does a wonderful job of explaining how the body works in layman's terms. I can honestly say that this book has changed my behavior long term (for the better) and that is really the mark of a good book.
This book is a pretty clear and non-technical bunch of explanations for the various systems in the body - what they all are, and how they work.
I wasn't as impressed with all the RealAge and "what you can do to live younger" stuff - it almost felt woo woo. And while I'm a pretty healthy person, this book made me feel like a slacker. Why am I not taking handfuls of supplements and doing all sorts of things to live forever?!?

If you don't have a medical degree, this is the book for you. If you have ever wondered how things work and why, this one is it! I can't recommend it enough as most of us haven't a clue as to what is important to our body.
You can never know too much about how your body works and what is really best for your health. The interface of this book is very easy to read and understand complicated medical terms. Is easy for both readers and non-readers.
It was interesting to read so much about the human body. I thought it would be boring or long and drawn out but it was very clearly written and fun to learn so many great things and how complex and miraculous our bodies are.
well, mostly read. I have been looking forward to reading this book for a long time, and I must admit I was kind of disappointed. I didn't read the whole thing, just the chapters that looked the most interesting and I even tried one of the recipes in the back, which was kind of shall we say disgusting. ughh. The humor in it was a bit too "sexual" for my liking, I mean seriously does everything have to be turned into a sexual joke?

Hands down one of the best and most pratical books I've read on how to take care of your body. Very easy to understand. Reliable sources of information. Lots of things you can implement today for better living!
