It's a work of speculative fiction, starting from the assumption that aether can be mined from the earth and harnessed via spells to machines and structures. Magic is coexisting with electricity and engineering, and guild of telegraphers is trying to stay on top. A mother and son move to Invercombe, in search of healing for the latter. They're at the top of their guild, but the mother wants power and a healthy son. She's pretty much willing to do anything to ensure these goals come to fruition. ...more

Picked this up because the author has an ear for language. A lyrical and magical take on nineteenth century England that never was---a world of industry and magic. You can trip on sound only for so long and then you have to wonder where the mesmers words are taking you.

MacLeod is one of the best writers in sci-fi/fantasy today, and his Victorian steam-fantasy work is brilliant. For some reason, however, this follow up to "The Age of Light" didn't grip me in the same way as the first novel.

the story just gets better. classic, Dickensian, dark fairy/alternate reality, morality, tale. this is a beautiful book.
