‘Beneath the palm tree she’d perished like a stone fruit amongst the leaves and insects: her flesh bruised a variety of shades, from black through to yellow; her facial features, for all their lovely detail, completely indistinguishable. Look what happened to me, I could hear her say. This is what they did to me.’

In February 2005, German backpacker Simone Strobel went miss

I enjoyed this book greatly. More than just a true crime story, the book explores many different threads from the impact of the events on both the victim's family, the likely perpetrators, and the author herself. The book also presents the author's own struggle with the writing, the moral and ethical issues in writing such a book, and the effect on the author's various relationships. It is a very human and compassionate story examining the complex themes that arise from such awful and ultimately ...more

Peters writes beautifully and has a wonderful instinct for story. Virginia Peters is the central character of this story (not Simone Strobel) and there were times that I felt like I didn't like Virginia's take on events and there were times when I felt like I didn't really like Virginia in general, but I felt that this was a very honest account and I could feel her growing as a person (and storyteller) as the narrative progressed. Peters was extremely forthcoming in relating her own motivations ...more

This book is well written and engrossing. It recounts the author's journey as she investigates the mystery of Simone's murder. It also recounts the very sad and mysterious circumstances surrounding Simone's death. It is an engaging and poignant book.

Couldn't put it down. And what a difficult story to write. Like Helen Garner, Virginia Peters puts herself and her doubts into this journey to find Simone. Having worked for The Northern Star made her comment son the media even more interesting and knowing some of the cops in Lismore too.
Cracking pace, empathy in the writing and such a complex project to tackle. Great read even if you know nothing about the case

I bought this book in the Sydney airport so that alone gives me special memories of it. This was a great read though, a sad tale of a murder and an author that can't uncover the truth. The cultural differences were also an interesting part of the story. We never find out the truth of what happened to Simone, but that seems true to how life often is.
