Coelho's Alchemist is one of my favorite books. I've read it twice, and both times its simple story and straightforward Universal Truths have stirred me. Brida tells a similar story about a youth who feels herself tugged onto a unique path toward greatness. But lightning has not struck twice.

I've never read anything by Paulo Coelho before, so I was rather surprised by the pagan spirituality of this little novel. It's the story of Brida, an Irish girl in training to become a witch. It is full of beautifully worded prose--I found myself making little tics and stars beside many paragraphs to go back and examine again (my apologies to those who get the ARC from me, lol). There is some seriously high minded spirituality folded into this simple book about a woman's quest to learn to us...more

Ok, so this book came recommended to me by a freind, so I was pretty excited to read it. Once I got started, however, I was a bit disappointed (soory M.C.)
First off, the main charachter was niave and a bit juvenille. Everything that she thought of and said was almost infintile.
Secondly, She was supposed to be searching for a "Gift" and there was never really a solid confirmation as to what this gift was, even when she found it.

I enjoyed reading this more than "The Witch of Portobello" (being the only other Coelho book I've read). Brida's transformation to "witch" is much more compelling than Athena's journey (I think I just found willing-to-learn Brida much more accessible than the lofty Athena). Paul Coelho still continues to fascinate me with his ability to mesh faiths - Jesus Christ, for example, appears quite a bit for a novel about the paths of witchcraft. Short version: Read it in 1 day. Loved it.
Longer version: This is Paulo Coelho at his best. Whether you agree with his particular spiritual beliefs or not, you can find important life lessons peppered throughout his imaginative stories. I would put Brida on par with The Zahir, my favorite Coelho book, because the characters are real and compelling. His narrative style is simple but carries you with its flow. Brida is a tale of love, passion, mystery, and spirituality from a master storyteller. Coelho wrote Brida right after The Alchemist, and it launched his career as an international novelist. What I love about Coelho's books is that not only are they inspiring but in the process they teach you about something I strongly bellieve in, that you hold the answers that unlock the door to your dreams and questions. As Brida goes on her search for her soulmate she finds that only she can truly know the truth. At least that's how I saw it and in the end the reader is encouraged to find their own way. As usual I was questioning my belief in soul mates and this book is about that. I really enjo...more

It seems just when I need it, a Coehlo book seems to jump off the shelves and into my arms. Such was Brida. I read it from one airport to the next, another theme of his books. I enjoyed this one much more then the witch of portebello. Perhaps it was subject matter, or the simplisity of story telling that he got me with, but it's going on the shelf next to Zahir as one of those books that helped me pass the moments of change from one continent to the next.

I always feel like something is lost in the translation of Coelho's books, but he is a wonderful storyteller. I read this book very quickly, which is unusual for me, because Brida's story really touched me. The themes of love, following ones path, struggling with doubt and commitment, and trusting ones own gifts, are universal. It didn't hurt that the setting is Ireland, since I have romantic visions of the Celtic / Pagan traditions there.

This is a philosophical and spiritual book - my rating is about my expectations of the book and what I was in the mood for - not the quality of the writing. There are some important ideas in this story - especially about deconstructive pride - thinking you are the worst or most miserable etc - something to think about when we get down on ourselves.

كتابهاي پائولو تمامش قشنگ و آموزندست ولي اين كتاب فوق العاده بود.البته نمي شه تمام چيز هايي رو كه پائولو بعنوان حقيقت بيان مي كنه پذيرفت و طبق اون پيش رفت ولي بعضي از جملات به ظاهر سادش راهگشاست.

This is the first time I have read anything written by Paulo Coelho and I really enjoy his magical story of Brida a young girl who goes in serch for a deeper meaning to her life. Paulo Coelho description of the mountains,forests and beautiful waterfalls was done so well that you really did feel apart of the magic that was going on..

As I understand it Coelho claims these stories are true or based on fact, but to me they depict a rather romantic and fanciful view of spirituality. I quite enjoyed it but very little happens in the 200 or so pages and the characters aren't really developed to any unusual depth, so it makes me wonder where all the words go :)
