recommends it for: Anyone who likes mainstream fiction with a little clean edginess
This is a chilling, very realistic book by the collaborative voice of two journalists under the pseudonym Nicci French.

Abbie Devereaux wakes up somewhere in the dark, wrists tied, ankles tied, gagged and blinded with a sack. She can't remember the past week. Her kidnapper tells her he's going to kill her, that he's killed other woman just like her, and there's nothing she can do about it. She is going to die. In desperation, Abbie tries to hang herself with the ropes she's tied to, ...more

Read in August, 2007
In the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs, Nicci French, bestselling author of Beneath the Skin and The Red Room, delivers what promises to be the psychological blockbuster of the season. Kidnapped, gagged, and held in an airless shed by some unknown assailant, Abbie Devereaux has somehow managed to survive her ordeal and escape. Now no one seems to believe her, including the police who found her bruised and beaten in a run-down neighborhood outside London, and the psychologists who interview...more

This page-turner kept me on the edge of my seat across the Tasman Sea and back. The comeuppance was a little silly and the fact that the killer kept all the mobile phones of his victims was a little foolish of him. But certainly a brilliant premise with tight and sharp adrenalin-filled prose.

I was judging this book by its cover when I first picked it up from the library. Yes, I know you're not supposed to do that, but this book came with the Typical Bestseller Cover with the author's name in giant foil letters. I hate that shit. I almost didn't read it because of that awful cover....

The plot was enough to get me over that hump. I have a policy of not reading the book's jacket for more than a few words, so the story is not spoiled for me. This book was quite startling...more

this was totally a guilty pleasure, but an exciting read nonetheless. this nice, normal woman wakes up to find that shes been kidnapped. she escapes somehow but then no one, from the cops to her friends and family, believe her. i raced through this book, wanting to see how it would be resolved. its your basic thriller fare, but clever and well written, with a satisfying wrap up. i will definitely seek out something else by this author, next time i'm slumming my way through the bookstore.

i ussually do not care much when warned I'd be going through thrilling and shocking experiences. well, this book has something that keeps you twisting uncomfortably. at first you like the heroine, than you hate her, that you do not understand her...and so, little by little you are gripped into tormentation and fear that after 200 pages you'll be left emptied and in need for more.

I like that we as readers are in the dark just as Abbie is. I get frustrated when authors lead us to conclusions or make us aware of something the main character is not aware of.

It is a good psychological thriller.

...I love Nicci French's explanation of the land of the living and the idea of wandering into the grasp of darkness where death and killers roam.

Book group choice...it was CREEPY. I started it 3 times, and was very uncomfortable with the theme! I guess that means it was well written! I finished it, and must say it was a better book than I first thought! At least the heroine/victim redeemed herself in my eyes by taking charge of things herself! I definitely wouldn't have finished it if it weren't for my group!

It was easy to read and not offensive.

A woman wakes up, bound and hooded. She manages to escape from her captor and returns home, only to find that she has forgotten what's happened in the days prior to her kidnap. No one really believes she's been kidnapped, but she is determined to reconstruct the days leading up to her capture.

And so on. Not bad, not great.

This was a very interesting, unusual take on the suspense/crime/thriller genre: the story begins *after* the crime has occurred, rather than before. I stayed up all night finishing this one...and, the next night, my husband (who doesn't usually go for this type of novel) stayed up reading it, too! This is definitely a must for any suspense fan.

Zeer spannend boek van begin tot einde. Psychologische thriller. Boek begint onmiddelijk met een vrouw die een zak over haar hoofd heeft, een prop in haar mond en ze is vastgebonden met haar nek aan de muur en ze weet niet waar ze zich bevindt of hoe ze daar geraakt is.

This is my 2nd French book. She has an odd yet alluring style. I "pushed" my way through this book eager to find out how all the twists would fit together and finally come to an end. It was satisfying but not predictible. I may just become a French fan.
