Written when Cathy Coote was nineteen, Innocents is a taut, wickedly clever descent into the anatomy of an obsession, the debut of a precociously assured and provocative young literary voice. Forcing someone vulnerable and naive into a sexual relationship to satisfy a twisted desire is perverted, even evil. But when the perpetrator is a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl, is she...more

Cathy Coote's INNOCENTS reads like the raw sexual fantasies of a hyper-articulate and sociopathic teenage girl. Coote's unnamed sixteen-year-old heroine is a manipulative control freak who feels like she's a "spy" in her own life, watching those she considers "normal" and trying desperately to convince them she's normal, too. She feels almost nothing genuinely. Her every emotion is fake, designed to elicit specific reactions from others. She's an emotional vampire who feeds off the sincerity and...more

Innocents is basically the story of a 16 year girl who seduces her teacher. So enamored by her is he, that he quits his job, rents them a new house and takes her away from her life. They have sex constantly and she's constantly manipulating him.

It's written sort of as a letter. Somewhere in the first 50 pages or so we discover that she's writing down an account of their affair and that this account is being written to her lover / the teacher, at his request. There are many sentences that end wit...more

I was looking for this book everywhere. Being an Australian book I would have figured it would be easy to come by but I had to import it from the Book Depository in the UK. After all the effort it took to acquire it, hoping it would be similar to The Virgin Suicides, and knowing it was meant to be a perverted take on the student-teacher relationship, I was horribly bored and disappointed. I got through the first chapter, or part, or whatever it was, okay. But it felt like it all got so boring af...more

While perusing one of the book communities I was apart of, I came across this book. The promise of intensive sex scenes certainly sparked my interest, but the initial premise of the characters also caught my eye. This book focuses on an age-gap relationship, and coming from such a thing, I was inspired to take on literature regarding this subject matter.

The plot is simple: A 16-year old girl falls for her 34-year old teacher, a la Lolita. But the complexities within the story really help to shap...more

Cathy Coote’s debut novel, Innocents, garnered some good press with its tale of a precocious 16 year old girl who pursues her 34 year old teacher.

"My darling", the book begins, "All of this is my fault. I know you think your to blame for what happened. You’re wrong, my love. I’ve been guilty all along".

Coote’s wrote this book when she was 19, so I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that this book hits close to home. That’s not to say that it wasn’t without its merits - but likable characters isn’...more

This book is, ultimately, an impressive accomplishment -- a serious look at a taboo relationship from the standpoint of examining it on its own terms; with the understanding of how desire and power can work from both ends of the innocence and experience spectrum. Coote, refreshingly, examines the disturbing moral aspects without succumbing to a hamfisted, moralistic denouement.

She's 16, the student and the aggressor. He's the 34-year-old teacher, the willing recipient of her attentions. This is...more

While on my student/teacher fascination binge, I came across this book about a year ago and was eager to read it...since it Amazon recommended. I trusted you, Amazon(dot)com. Anyways, I was highly upset, especially about the ending. Nothing was resolved and the book didn't really end in my opinion. This 16 year-old girl likes her teacher. The girl, who's also the protagonist...I think...isn't even likable. She's a bit sadistic. She spends time drawing naked girls in a tormenting fashion. Oh and...more

This is one of the most engrossing books I've read in my entire life. The sexuality and vulgerness was definitely a tough obstacle for me to get over while reading it, but as I kept reading, I saw past it. The book just grew on me. I couldn't put it down.

It was odd though, that the author never mentioned the names of the two of them. She mentioned the names of many others, but not the girl and the teacher.

The ending, or the last two paragraphs I should say, left me in deep thought. I knew that...more

When I was 16, I went to the local horse races for a big meeting. My best friend in high school, her father trained racehorses and I went to meetings a lot. My friend’s workmate was there (she worked in a local dept store and this man was one of the dept managers) with his friends, who he introduced to us. One of them, was really nice and we spent a lot of time together having bets before he asked me out. He’d already volunteered that he was a school teacher, at the primary school linked to my h...more

This is a VERY sexual book. If you don't like that type of subject, then this will not appeal to you. Especially with the older man and young girl setting. This is a story and it is a game. It's almost brilliant and it shows how smart and how terrifyingly smart this young girl is. It's written in her point of view, its a letter from her to him and she goes over how she played him every step of the way, not used, but used her body and her moves and how she planned and acted almost every part of w...more

This book is perverted, disgusting, and disturbing. It left a horrible taste in my mouth and even made me sick to my stomach at some points.

So why not just 1-star? Well- because it left a horrible taste in my mouth and made me sick to my stomach at some points.

The author was only 19 when she wrote this, and the fact that she could write in such a way to elicit such feelings out of me is a testament to her skills.

Would I read this again? No. Would I recommend it to anyone? HELL no. But I can't...more

I haven't read such a thought provoking book in really long time. The story in itself is very disturbing and though reminiscent of Vladīmir Vladimirovich Nabokov's Lolita it's told from the prospective of the young girl and is in the form of a letter to her teacher and lover. The language is simplistic and innocent, beautifully capturing the image of a confused teenager masking her inner turmoil by trying to be just like everyone else. Her brazen honesty is shocking through the book and at times...more

During the summer after reading 'A Season of Eden' I started to look for novels with a teacher-student relationship. It is one of those "forbidden" topics and I think that novels written about that are always very interesting. I have read a couple novels like that in English and also some in Finnish.

'Innocents' was very different from the similar novels I've read before, in a good way. The story is told through a long "letter" from a 16 year old girl to her teacher. In this letter the girl, the...more

With the promise of redefining the stereotypes of Lolita-esque relationships, I had very high expectations for this novel. Of course, I kept in mind there is nothing completely original about turning the tables on this sort of thing; I’ve seen it many times before, and I’ll certainly encounter it again. Every professional review I read seemed to guarantee the portrayal of a twisted relationship, woven into unhealthy, erotic obsession. Ironically, for me, Innocents was a hollow and horribly prete...more

What can I say..this was not that good. It tried way to hard to wrap up emotions with sex and such that it almost became confusing. To be honest, I am disappointed that I just lost 13 dollars. Some scenes were a bit arousing, although barely. The main character had me slightly smiling at some times with her sociopath-ic behavior, although in the end, nothing special at all. Yes the fact that they are nameless does a bit of something, although this book is nearly not as graphic as I thought it wo...more

I really enjoyed this book, although I may have blushed a few times when reading it. I love the relationship between the two of them, the constant ebb and flow of power and how both of them assume that they are in total control. I wish the ending was different though, and by ending I mean probably about the last 2 paragraphs or so. Overall I enjoyed the original style of Coote's writing mixed with a very interesting story! LOVED IT!

It was an interesting book. I wasn't sure how I felt about the girl. I felt bad for her on one hand since she seemed unaware of how far her powers went. But I also disliked her because she did seem aware of her power. I also felt bad for the teacher although I felt he should have resisted her better. In short, I had a lot of mixed feelings for the characters. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending.

Crazy. I really like this book. It's slightly unnerving because you find yourself disgusted and sympathizing with the same character. You're natural instinct is to be disgusted with the teacher, obviously what he is doing is bad. But at the same time you sympathize because he is so unaware of the manipulation she is using. She's clearly a sociopath.
It's a weird read but it's good.

Honestly it kind of reads like a virgin's idea of a kinky, far-fetched (but still somehow "safe") fantasy. There isn't really much of an actual plot. It's just "we had sex and then we had sex and also we had sex". That was it. This book ended up being a book where through the entire thing, I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did.

Exceptionally good writing for an author of such a young age - I had read once that writing erotica is not easy - it's apparently difficult to keep it from sliding into 'heaving bosoms territory'. Her main character's abiliities as a 'game player' were fascinating as was the absolute guilt-enhanced indulgence in forbidden fruit on the part of the teacher.
I agree with one of the other earlier comments on this book - the ending should have finished a few paragraphs earlier than it did; it would h...more

The book was okay, but I never liked the main character from the beginning. She's sadistic, manipulative, and completely annoys the crap out of me with her constant obsession with seducing her teacher. But overall, I liked the detail and how the story/letter was written. It'd be nice to read a sequel to this, though =/

this is one sexual book! What made it more interesting was how a sixteen year old seduces her thirty-four year old teacher. written in a letter form the lolita complex is fully described to the reader. You go Coote !

This was an interesting read. The way it was written was really infuriating. I had to go back and re-read some pages. I felt like I was lost half the time. Anyways I feel like this book had no plot, no climax, and no issue to solve. It was boring. I feel like the author just threw in random sadistic sex scenes to make the book readable. I will not be reading anything else by this author.

Okay I am honestly in love with student teacher love stories...it's so romantic and lovely. And I thought this book would be no exception. It would be about forbidden love, however, it surely wasnt. To sum it up, this book reminded me so much of 50 shades of gray except it was more perverse, but slightly more romantic (which doesn't say much). I didn't understand these characters, like what led the teacher into having a thing got younger girls? I felt little or no emotion towards these mindless...more

written as a letter from a manipulative 16 year old girl to her teacher, a retrospect of their life as lovers, I skipped some pages in the middle, boring in the end

The book tried hard to be overly shocking, which is probably why it fell flat for me. I do give it three stars, though, for the little gems of prose in between the stilted dialogue.

- Whoa, a smutty book haha. One of the raunchiest books I've read :-o
- I was just waiting for something to happen to this couple because what they were doing was illegal. I was surprised that other teachers didn't try to intervene, and that Cathy's family didn't seem to care that she left them.
+ This forbidden kind of relationship (teacher-student) has been happening more often in the real world, so reading this story was believable. It was interesting.
+ I like that it took place in Australia, a...more
