Recommends it for:
fans of historical fiction
A great romp with lots of solid historical background. This is NOT fantasy, though the cover might lead one to think so. There are a couple of wizards and magicians, but their supernatural powers lie only in their own heads. The setting is the Persian Empire of Xerxes after his defeat at the hands of the Greeks, mid-5th century BCE. I've dubbed this 'the cursed book' because:
~ left it in a friend's tent while camping and didn't get it back for a couple of weeks
~ misplaced it again for a month before finding it under the bed (damn cats)
~ getting near the end I discovered that the book was missing a chunk of pages
~ ordered a copy off Abebooks and a day or so later the dealer refunded me saying that the book had already sold
~ ordered another copy off Abebooks and this happened again
~ finally received another copy a couple of w...more
