"Give Me Half" is a great book to teach about halves! The book uses items like pizza, juice, cupcakes, and cookies to demonstrate how to share with halves. The book is about a brother and sister who have trouble sharing their food, but someone continues to interfere between them and makes them share their food by showing them how much each should get (one person gets a half and the other person gets another half). For example, the book shows how to share half a pizza by giving 1/2 of the pizza t...more
Give me half is one of the best math books I have read so far. The book is about a brother and sister who are having a hard time sharing. A parent steps in and let's them know they need to share. Everything must be spilt down the middle. They children then spilt their pizza, juice and desert in half. The picture in this book are amazing. They are so colorful and the demeanor of the children is spot on. My favorite aspect of the book is how the author breaks down half facts. For example, they use...more
Give me half is a fictional book, the story is about two children: a younger brother and his older sister. The younger brother has a pizza and is asked to share it with his sister, the brother does not want to share his pizza but does so reluctantly in order that the older sister will share her food. They then face the problem of how to share the pizza equally.

This book is about two siblings who refuses to share with one another. They go through a series of items where they do not want to share, but eventually ends up sharing.

We've been reading lots of different books in the various MathStart series by Stuart J. Murphy. This book is in the MathStart Level 2 series and introduces the concept of fractions to children.
The narrative is funny and features two siblings squabbling over sharing food. The ending is humorous, but messy. The illustrations are fun and help depict the fractions. We enjoyed reading this book together.

Shows how siblings split up a pizza and is a great illustrator for showing students fractions, and ways of halving things.
This book is very good to teach to students that math is done everywhere and a majority of the time: at home, at school, on the bus, at the store.
The teacher could give students a hands on experience by getting paper plates (in place of pizza) and allow students to draw and cut the pizza (following along with the story) in order to understand the use of fractions.

After reading this book I will break my students up into groups and have them go around the room completing different stations. At one station there will be unifix cubes where they will have to represent the fraction 1/2. Station 2 could be a sheet of paper where they will find a way to represent 1/2, and station three they will have to write a word problem that incorporates 1/2. At the end of our stations we will come together as a class and discuss the different ways we separated our objects i...more
I like this book because it does not only introduce the concept of sharing, but it teaches children the concepts of fractions or making a whole, which equals 1. Also, I can use this book in the classroom with relevant objects students may have at home for practice, for example: pizza, a can of juice, cupcakes, cookies, etc. Overall, this book does a good job of defining the meaning of "half". As a teacher, I can teach my students that half is part of a whole, as well as the numbers and symbols a...more
The Title of the book is Give me Half by Stuart Murphy. published in 2003. I got to meet stuart murphy last spring at the NCTM conference in Washington D.C. He is a great children's author in that most of the books he writes, they deal with math.

This book is a good introduction to understanding fractions. After reading the story, I will have different shapes and sizes cut out with pieces of paper. As a class, we will work together to find different ways to fold the paper in half and we will discuss what things we could half in real life that are the same shapes that we have on our papers. For example, a cookie, a candy bar, an ice cream cookie bar, etc. to tie this back to real life experiences.
I used this book to introduce fractions to a first grade class. Kids loved it because it's written as a poem and they could all relate to sharing with a brother/sister. The only problem I found was their splitting of a package of 2 cupcakes. The book portrays it as 1 cupcake and 1 cupcake equals 2 cupcakes. These can lead to the misconception of breaking a whole (the package) into parts gives you two NEW wholes. I ended up using sticky notes to "fix" it.
This is a really cute and funny book that teaches sharing and fractions. At first the brother and sister are fighting over everything so much that they make a huge mess and then realize that if they split the work in half then they will each have to do less. After reading this book I might actually bring in a pizza, or use a fake one and have the students figure out the best way to split it up. I also really love the illustrations in this book! :)
This is a really cool book to introduce fractions and the concept of half in relationship to sharing. As the brother and sister learn to share the food each of them have, they are also learning about fractions. I like the fact that the book also introduces a new term, divide, in an appropriate manner. I can see us having a discussion about sharing equally and doing small groups activities that require us to share equally.
Theme: math, halves, sharing, rhyming, siblings
This book is a basic introduction to the concept of 1/2. Two siblings begin to fight over the eating of a pizza and the chores that have to be done at home. They eventually figure out that half is fair.
Uses in the classroom: Can be used in 1-3 grade when introducing fractions and the concept of 1/2. Students can practice making 1/2 of a group of items.

This is a great book about sharing. It teaches students the idea of halves by showing pictures, having words, and also having numbers. It is about a brother and sister that fight over everything and their mother makes them share. At the end of the story they had fought so much over everything that they made a mess. They realized that by splitting the work in half, they would both have to do less.
This is a great book to read to the children when introducing or elaborating the concept of fractions! I used this in one of my math lessons. As I read the book, students folded the piece of paper according to the fraction. One whole pizza folded in half represented half of the pizza the children shared. This worked as my lesson engager as I elaborated with more fraction activities.
This book is filled with wonderful fractions. I would love to use this book in my classroom. This story begins witha sister and brother who must share a whole pizza. The book is not only filled with actual fraction math problems but it is also filled with rhyming words to help promote phonemic awareness. The book also uses the pizza and soda to show what 1/2,1/3, and 1/4 exactly are.
Splitting things in half may seem like an easy thing to do, but when two siblings and a pizza are involved, things can get messy. Children learn about fractions at school but fractions are also an important part of everyday life outside the classroom. We talk a lot about cooking and how we use fractions in cooking. We then, as a class, make our very own pizza measuring out everything!
Children learn about fractions and that they are easy to be found outside of school (such as splitting a pizza). This would best be read as an introduction to fractions. Students could do a follow-up activity by creating their own paper pizza and splitting them into 1/2's 1/4's and 1/6's. A model that is tangible will allow them to understand the concept more easily.
This is a cute book about sharing and fractions. The brother and sister each have things that they want for themselves but they are made to share everything equally so that they each get half. This goes all the way down to the food fight they had where they each have to clean up half the mess. This story is good because it shows you the math problem.
Teach Fractions using this book. Teacher should bring in the item in the book to show children and let them experience making fractions by the daily foods they eat.
In this book the two kids share a pizza, juice, and cupcake. They split these items in halves equally. Then afterwards they also share cleaning up half the mess.

Kids have to share with their siblings the most so what better way to have your students connect to fractions than this book. The little boy is sitting down to eat his whole pizza when his sister comes to the table. They must split the pizza evenly to create two halves. Great visual on basic fractions.

This book is a wonderful book to use when introducing fractions to students. Not only does this book provided good math vocabulary and concepts but it also tells a story that students can relate it. The students are able to see how fractions will be used in their everyday life. I love Stuart J. Murphy books!!
A great story about a brother and sister who have to Split different foods evenly. They have to use fractions in order to have an even Share! Activity: the students can draw some pizzas, drinks, pie, or cake and they have to draw how they would divide them between their family members. Grades 3-5.
Learning about "half" in class is easy; Living and sharing "halves" is not so easy.
Our characters, a pair of siblings, will lead our young readers to explore "halves" in the world around them.
"half of a pizza! half of a can of juice!" Give me Half is a great tool to help children understand halves
and rhyming words. One stone - two birds.
