Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder
For Tony Hawk, it wasn't enough to skate for two decades, to invent more than eighty tricks, and to win more than twice as many professional contests as any other skater. It wasn't enough to knock himself unconscious more than ten times, fracture several ribs, break his elbow, knock out his teeth twice, compress the vertebrae in his back, pop his bursa sack, get more than f

I generally stay away from Biographies, mainly because most are by people who've barely done a single impressive thing with their lives.
However, few can say to have done more in their lifetime than Tony Hawk. This book is one of the most interesting, heart warming, heart breaking and inspiring books I've ever read. It's a book about a geeky little boy who struggled with the slow pace of school, who grew up to be one of the most successful sportsmen of all time, if anything bringing ska...more

this book is about how to skate. also it talks about tony hawks life as a kid and how hard he worked for to be a skater because its not easy to be a skater. it also talks about some tricks that he could not land as a kid but everyday he did his hw and went out and skated because that was his life. he really wanted to be a skater and he worked for that and now he is a pro skater. this boobs says to me that is you work hard you will get what you want because you can not become famous with out wo...more
A must-read for all the (ex) skaters out there. Through Tony Hawk´s personal story one gets familiar with a big part of the sk8 culture, especially its second and third waves in the 80´s and 90´s and what went on behind the scenes.
I feverishly devoured the book in a few days, though I must admit I did expect much more wild tales of debauchary proper to the skating world, and it came a bit short on that front. But again Tony Hawk isn´t really a 'role model' when it comes to misbehavi...more

My opinion of the book Hawk Occupations by tony Hawk was that I found it really interesting. The book talks about how skateboarding has evolved into what it is, it talks about how skate boarding even got started. But this book is mostly about Tony Hawk growing up and what he did to become the most famous skateboarders in the world. At first I thought it would be futile for me to read this book sense I’m not interested in skateboarding. But I found Tony Hawk being an interesting person. This book...more
Really enjoyed this. Great, crazy stories about demo tours across the US. It's also interesting to see how the sport progressed through the 80s into the 90s and then into the early 00s. Also liked hearing about the creation of the "extreme games" (or the x games as they're known as now. Side note: the day when Tony Hawk doesn't announce skateboarding during summer x is going to be a really fucking sad day). Also loved reading about what Tony thinks of some of the other big skaters -- B...more
I think that Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder is an amazing book because it is all about Tony Hawks life from a child to becoming the best skateboarder in the world. One thing that I like about the book is that you get to hear Tony Hawks life in complete detail such as, what he was like as a kid, when he got his first skateboard, who was Tony Hawks first sponser, and so much more. One thing that the book could have changed was the order of which date or year comes first. Because at one point he...more
The most famous skateboarder in the world tells his own story with the help of Sean Mortimer. This is a story of success and failure. Boys will love this book, especially if they have any interest in skating. The book is loaded with stats and pictures. A great way to get boys to read nonfiction literature. There is some profanity and potty humor in the book, but no more than would be expected from a book about the skateboarding culture.
Tony Hawk has been one of the most influential and popular professional skateboarders in the history of skateboarding. He turned pro at an early age and has been changing the perception of the sport and has been instrumental in creating the idea of skateboarding that we have today. His autobiography gives detailed information about his experiences within the industry, his evolution as a skater, and his thoughts and feelings about where skateboarding has been, is now, and should be in the futur...more
Seemingly written for a twelve year old by a twelve year old, Hawk's autobiography nonetheless will appeal to young middle schoolers who are beginning to really dig skateboarding. Plus, it was fun to get this much background info on a dude who's been skating for yeeeears, things like how he earned and lost a fortune in sponsorships before he was even out of high school.
Hawk's a funny, nice guy, an adventurous entrepreneur and a generous philanthropist, so I would definitely recommend...more

This was sort of geared toward a target audience of 14 year old boys, I think. But I really liked it anyway, even if I'm a 32 year old mom (holy crap, I'm a mom!). I have a ton of respect for Tony Hawk, and I've always been a fan, even if I was never a skater and I can't tell the difference between a 540 and a 720 and have no idea what a McTwist looks like. I liked reading the story of how he came up.
The story of skateboarder Tony Hawk's rise to fame and his adventures along the way! I enjoyed this read, if you're into skateboarding or Birdman Tony Hawk check it out sometime.
After finishing the book it felt good. The best part was reading about the greatest skateboarder ever. His life story was nice and cool and it will always be one of my favorite books

kinda stopt mid-end-ish cuz it got just too gross-boy and was already boring so i just finally gave up and moved on :P
I didn't realize how much money pro / endorsed skaters where making in the early days... If I knew that I would have stuck with it and practiced more... For Christ sakes Tony Hawk owned his own home before he graduated high school... Much props to the legend and one of the innovators of the sport..
I've always loved Tony Hawk, skateboarding, etc. I thought this was really interesting and had lots of good pictures.
chose this for an "in school read" and my genere was authobiography. A man who likes risks!
I loved this book when I was in high school.
Classic revenge of the nerd saga:
Nerdy kid is ostracized for his individuality and vision.
Luckily family support and determination help him shape the future of the sport.
Tony's voice is present throughout, including his well known potty humor. Not afraid to reveal his own struggles and humiliations. This is not the ghostwritten fluff piece timeline you'd expect from a top pro athlete at the peak of his popularity.
One star deducted because the Rodney Mullen book is even b...more

Tony Hawk is the coolest dude out there. I read this book cause I am a huge fan. Yes, I'm only a month younger than Tony Hawk, but I think that anyone who survived skateboarding's tumultuous birth/rebirth and come out on top deserves my affection. Plus, he's downright cool. This is your typical tell-all book, but what's great about it is that it reads as if he's sitting in front of you rapping at you.
Quick read filled with funny anecdotes and interesting stories about Tony Hawk and skateboarding in general.
This was a great book that told all the crazy things about Tony Hawk. Many of his autobiography was about skateboarding, but there was other tales from being on tv commercials to exploding ramps. I would definitely recommend Occupation: Skateboarder to anyone who is interested in skateboarding or anyone who would like to read a good autobiography.
I still love him, but I'm glad Tony Hawk didn't quit his day job. I read this after finishing Nick Hornby's Slam. It was a fun nostalgia trip with the Bones Brigade, Animal Chin et al, but it was a total clunker as a narrative.
I think this is the one that I read. It has been a long time. But I think I remember an incident where someone wiped their hind quarters with a t-shirt and then threw it into the woods. That is just fun to read about!
Very much enjoyed this book. My son was jealous I was reading it and he is 6! Of course it was over his head, but I sured learned a lot of skateboarding terms!
Growing up loving Tony Hawk, Chris Miller & the rest of the skater/BMX boys, I really enjoyed this little glimpse into Tony's life.

ithink that its a really cool book because its about tony hawks history and he is one of the best skaters in the world.
I used to really like Tony Hawk and skateboarding (surprising, I know). But even still this is a pretty interesting memoir.
Much, Much better than I thought it would be, just a good easy read with some fun anecdotes.
Really enjoyed this book. Funny, informative, and well-written. Thoroughly good read.
Could be the greatest skater ever, so it is a great book.
