It was one of the greatest romances of our time. They were both Hollywood giants in their own right, yet it was the nine hit films Katherine Hepburn made with Spencer Tracy that, in the eyes of the American public, defined them as Hollywood's most celebrated romantic team. On-screen, the headstrong Tracy had met his match and she put him in his place. Off-screen, despite t ...more

I am not sure I have a better understanding of either Katherine Hepburn or Spencer Tracy.

Love is different things to different people.
Views and opinion are always different on what constitutes love.

I don't get the affair that went on between these two at all.

Katherine Hepburn was apparently very devoted to Spencer Tracy.
So much so that each time he went on a drunken rampage
She was there to quietly clean him and the situation up.
Is that love?
If Spencer Tracy had not been an actor he would just be

After discovering this book at the same time that I found Katharine Hepburns biography, I decided to read this book hoping that I would get more insight into the relationship that Katharine and Spencer Tracy had. I was a little apprehensive about reading this book because I like to read biographies written by the actual people so that it guarantees the information is correct. Thankfully this book lived up to my expectations. I had always thought that they had a perfect relationship, but this boo ...more

Twenty-seven years, that's how long the love affair of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy lasted. The first book I ever read on these two remarkable people (Tracy and Hepburn) left me amazed by what they had accomplished in their film careers and introduced me to the beauty of their relationship with each other.

This book, by Christopher Anderson, helped me understand how "one of the greatest romances of our time" endured. Spencer had been married to the same woman for over forty years at the t

This book was really long and I skimmed over some of it. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were two of the biggest actors during the Hollywood Golden Age. Due to that fact, people glorify their relationship by calling it one the greatest romances of all time. What romance? He was married, an alcoholic, verbally abusive and often times did not show up for work. She cleaned up his messes, made excuses for him when he was on a bender, and sacrificed her career to make sure he was safe and clean. ...more
There has always been a lot of interest in Connecticut about Katharine Hepburn who was born in Hartford and retired along the Connecticut shore. That was probably why our book group librarian picked this book about Hepburn and the love of her life, the talented Spencer Tracy. This biography tells about their parents and childhoods as well as their years as actors. Katharine Hepburn was a very independent woman, unusual for that time. The married Spencer Tracy was a very popular movie star, but f ...more

If you have seen some of Hepburn's work and want to learn more about her life behind the scenes, check out this book. Hepburn was an incredible woman and her relationship with Tracy is fascinating. The two of them interacted with the greatest stars of the time. The book is filled with a million anecdotes that you can use to drive your friends and family crazy. Like Hemingway goading Tracy, "Can't you just have a drink or two? Do you have to go till you're insensible?" A big theme of the book: no ...more

Words can not express the emotion I felt reading this book. I could not stop crying at the end. I have always admired Katharine Hepburn and even more so now. "She was merely the latest in a long line of tough, morally courageous women who made sacrifices for the far weaker men they loved...He needed her and she needed him to need her."

Absolutely beautiful!

June 2, 2015 - I borrowed this book from my public library. I'm enjoying it immensely. As I said at my group: "They were quite the couple! I don't know where they got the energy to do all the things they did. So many plays, so many movies, so much traveling! So much emotion!

This book was well done and really gave a background on both Hepburns and Tracy's lives - but Spencer Tracy was a dog and Katherine Hepburn must have had her own issues to tolerate his garbage for so many years!

The passion sparked by the romance of Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn in turn, awoke in me an adoration of the biographies of old hollywood stars, acting as a catalyst of sorts. I am ashamedly doing this review many months after finishing this book, however I am currently reading another Katharine Hepburn book (her autobiography "Me.") and would definitely recommend reading this as a supplement if you're ravenously curious about the forbidden romance that had all the tongues of old Hollywood wagg ...more

my favorite genre in books are new and old classic, fantasy and Biographies.. and I read almost only bios about old movie stars and this one was about the Amazing Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and their remarkable love affair that lasted 26 years.. I didn't want to stop reading for a second it was by far one of the best books I have ever read.

You get to read about both of their childhoods and then the bigger half of the book is about their life together and they certainly were extraordinar

This is a very well written book about a difficult situation. A classic love triangle with one difference, it involved three people who tried very hard not to hurt each other. Although I will say many of the stories seemed to indicate that Spencer Tracy did not at all mind hurting his "soulmate" and "one true love" Katharine Hepburn. I have always loved Spencer Tracy as an actor, but he was really a horrible human being. Cruel to those he supposedly loved most, a violent drunk and a unrepentant ...more

It's interesting to read about the Hepburn-Tracy relationship and try to understand their motives and why they did what they did. Why Hepburn appeared to be so submissive to Tracy as she wasn't to anyone else in any other area of her life, and why Tracy was so guilt-ridden over his deaf son, and how that guilt manifested itself in basically his self-destruction. It was especially interesting to read Kate's published law journal viewpoint from years and years ago of the loss of privacy for a publ ...more

I have long been a fan of the Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn movies...both made together and separately. This book describes the career choices they made during their 27-year-long love affair, and how those choices impacted each other. Theirs was a love affair most people only can dream about. Although Spencer remained married to his wife, Louise (out of the guilt he bore relating to his son being deaf), his commitment and devotion to Katherine was unwavering. There are wonderful anecdotes ...more

Hollywood reads like a soap opera. Blind drunk, deaf son, married, tons of affairs, brilliant actor, long time affair, with some triple affair overlaps, that was just Spencer Tracy! All sorts of other actors/actresses, manic depressives, more alcoholics, on and on and on....then lots of untimely deaths.....I kept reading, really liked to learn about their upbringing before hitting hollywood.
Ok read. Put your feet up, grab a drink or 20.

This book was a fascinating look at the 27 year love affair between Spencer Tracy and Kathryn Hepburn. It dispells a lot of myths about their affair and is a very moving story of two very difficult people and their struggle to remain true to themselves while trying not to hurt anyone else. They made fascinating choices for the times in which they lived.

This one was a slow start but picked up once it got into the relationship between Tracy and Hepburn. It was a dream shatterer for me though. I always thought they had this ideal relationship. Boy, was I wrong! They were as normal as everybody else. Lots of Hollywood gossip in this book too!

A wonderful, easy read. Warning: this is a romanticized telling of their relationship, but nonetheless enjoyable. If you are looking for a more realistic account, check out Spencer Tracy by James Curtis.

Read this because my mom had just finished it & really liked it. Filled with interesting "inside" info into the couple's nearly thirty year romance, however much of the "Old Holywood" talk was before my time. I can understand why my mom would get a lot more out of it.

A beautiful book about the relationship between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. I learned a lot about them I didn't know and it really shows how devoted they were to each other.
Amazing, lovely, in-depth biography of both Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and their films - and personal lives - together.

A bit sappy and fawning, but still a fascinating look at one of Hollywood's most famous couples. And man, Spencer Tracey had issues, yo.

A rather ordinary biography but it did give me some insight into Spencer Tracy's unpleasant personality and Katharine Hepburn's total devotion to him.

Blech. Clip job from Christopher Andersen who is not the most insightful biographer to begin with. Save your money.

I love the old Hollywood actors and their stories.
This was a far more detailed biography of Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy than I had previously read and I thoroughly enjoyed it especially since I have enjoyed all their old movies.
