okay yea. (i know you're going to give me flack for all these books Justin. Im prepared)
this book is also ridiculous. Sometimes i wonder how authors come up with these characters.
The novel is deeply psychological because it attempts to get into the mind of a man who's attempt to "embrace" his "heritage" ultimately leads him to exploit and ridicule the very people he desires to help. Lewis really is a genius with this novel.

recommends it for:
anyone interested in how bad racism was in 1947
I love Sinclair Lewis for this one reason: he gets in the mind of the people he most despises and then turns one of them into a hero. I should have read this book before Parting the Waters. Some of the characters in this book are the same guys (in content of character) who 15 years later bombed homes and churches in Birmingham. The depth of their hatred is so hard to comprehend.

Interesting take on black / white relations. Really makes you question what is black and what is white.
