What a great read. I found Emma to be a wonderful heroine. She saved the hero numerous times, survived harrowing situations, and fought to be strong when she was bred and raised to be weak by a bully of a father. I liked Jake, but this book stands out because of Emma. Jake was a little too preoccupied about being trapped into marriage for my tastes. I was like, "get over it." Otherwise he was a great hero, who knew how to live off the land, and could get himself and Emma out of a tight fix.

What an adventure! Crossing the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada mountains and traveling to Northern California in 1830, on a route no white man (or woman) has travelled before.

The adventure is non-stop with Emma and Jake constantly in danger. Emma is a great character. Talk about strong! Jake couldn't ask for a better partner. Emma is constantly surprising Jake with her quiet strength, fortitude, courage, resourcefulness, and independence. Plus, she is a damn good shot.

3.5. I enjoy books that describe traveling across the new frontier of America. This certainly did that, describing scenic wilderness nicely. Where it fell short was in creating a compelling lovestory. I found myself reading just to read, not out of any sincere interest in what was going to happen to Emma and Jake. Just OK.

This book is filled with action, romance and more action. As the reader, I felt that Kernan did her research of the era and has written a good book. As a native to Utah, i appreciated her taking the characters by the Great Salt Lake.
This book is a a great adventure. I wasn't totally captured by the main character, Jake, but he wasn't bad. I did like Emma. I felt she was a very strong willed, ambitious woman who knew what she liked and didn't like. I admired her for her courage and spunk.

Very exciting historical adventure especially the second half of the story. Good paced action as they brave the elements of the wild west but I did get tired of hearing the hero repeatedly state he would never marry. Jake saves Emma from a Crow Indian massacre and she joins him on a trek across the Rocky mountains.
