This is a good read, although not Lehane's best.
Lehane Overcomes Cliches
Anyone else this would be a standard, mediocre thriller--you have several cliched elements:
1. a psycho stalker who appears to have unlimited resources and how (it is never entirely explained why) is obsessed with his victims;
2. the "cat-mouse game" dialogue of the protagonist interacting with the villian (has become overused since Silence of the Lambs or In the Line of Fire);

I always want to grumble at the amount of sociopathy and firepower deployed in this series, but I have to admit that by this point in his career Lehane knows exactly how to keep the pages turning. His plotting has improved to the stellar level always enjoyed by his characterizations and dialogue -- they may be mostly psycho, but damned if his people don't jump off the page -- and the mood of desperate longing for redemption is practically his trademark now.

I wanted to read this book as I'd recently seen the movie "Gone, Baby, Gone" and remembered how much I had enjoyed the characters of Patrick and Angie...and I requested this book, somehow thinking it was a recent publication.
I tore thru it, staying up til 1 AM to finish it, and was nearly finished when I realized I had read it before -- and then checked the pub date and it was pre-2000 (97 or 98 or thereabouts)
I left it out for Terry who also read it in a day and loved it. I'd ...more

This is the fifth and final book of Dennis Lehane's in the series focusing on private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. In this book, the Kenzie creates a case as a personal desire. After reading 5 of the book in this series back-to-back, some of the plot twists became apparent to me. While I expected an ending that would complete the series, this book ended just as the others in the series did. This case is complete, but nothing signifies the end of the Kenzie-Gennaro series.

Dennis Lehane rocks. His books never fail to impress me. This is the third I've read but my first foray into the world of Patrick Kenzie. I'm definitely going to go back and read the others in that series (this is the last, I believe). I like Lehane because he is unpredictable and he makes no guarantees that the story will have a happy ending. I respect that in an author because hey, not all stories end happily. His novels usually leave you feeling a bit unsettled and I like that.

Talk about not choosing a book by it's title or cover... I picked this up WAY back when, thinking I'd be reading about Native American history.... Yeah. I'm pretty observant. What I ended up with was a laugh-out-loud mystery book. There were moments that read like, "It was a dark and stormy night, and she walked into my office" ...and I loved EVERY moment of it.

It is the detective noir genre mixed with psychological thriller.
Had me on the edge of my seat...I didn't read it but listened to the audio on my long trips along the East Coast when I was doing the long distance thing with Ross.
But it is by far my favorite book in this genre!!!
Happy reading, I wish I could read it all over again for the first time....

I really must get some new reading material...I found this one in the bottom of a messy drawer! Like most of Lehane's stories, this one was filled with violence and often unbelievable happenings. Still, it made for a quick read on a cold day!

Lehane's prose is funny, complex, and at times, takes my breath away. There were several pages I read while holding my breath, and several I had to reread to appreciate what he does with words. I want to read everything he has written.

This was a great thriller... though I'm happy that my husband read it first and warned me not to read the chapter about the dog. I thought it was well-written, with well-developed characters and a great (though twisted) plot.

I am just really enjoying Dennis Lehane's books right now-I have also seen the movies Mystic River and Gone Baby, Gone and read those-loved them all so far.

If seen the movie version of gone baby gone and loved it, so i tried this book. Overall i liked it, but thought the ending was a bit lame.

Not as good as "Darkness Take My Hand," but pretty darn close. Another story where I was completely in the dark about the ending.

I like the Lehane mysteries, probably because they are all set in Boston! Mystic River was the best.

I wish goodreads had half-star ratings. But I was feeling generous, so I went with the four star.

Can't get much better than Lehane for a good home baked story stocked with crime, love, and humor.

I'm a recent fan of LeHane. Most of his books are older, but so far they're all excellent

This book follows "Gone Baby Gone" and while not as dark, is still pretty impressive.
