Titolo enigmatico: a chi è riferita, a chi appartiene la bravura?
La mia interpretazione propende per aggiudicarla allo stesso Carrère, qui alla sua prova d’esordio: esordio basato sull’eclettismo, i rimandi cinematografici (o addirittura, le anticipazioni), il gioco di specchi, il disorientamento del lettore. Si parte con Dostoevskij, ci si immerge nel gotico, e si finisce probabilmente fra le braccia di Borges.
Ma, alla lunga, una bravura eccessiva, un po’ fine a se stessa.

Il romanzo ruota attorno a un soggiorno realmente accaduto che fecero a Villa Diodati, vicino a Ginevra, i coniugi Shelley, Lord Byron e il dottor Polidori (medico di quest’ultimo). Più in particolare sulle notti passate a raccontarsi storie dell’orrore e culminate con una sfida durante la quale, grazie ai suggerimenti di Polidori, nascerà il futuro Frankenstein di Mary Shelley. The first part, with Polidori, is very good (if very depressing and not historically accurate). The subsequent parts with Polidori's retelling of Frankenstein is just overly dramatic and tedious. I didn't finish it.

Content d'en avoir fini avec ce livre. Très inégale, difficile à suivre par moment, bien écrit tout le temps. Je ne le conseille pas spécialement.
