I think like most Elizabeth George fans, I got frustrated with the way Lynley behaved in this book. Normally I get through her books in a flash, but with this one I got so bogged down in the Havers/Lynley mess. One of the things I like so much about this series is their relationship and it was on the skids. I wanted to hit him.
But, it was George, so it was still a good read.

As usual, Elizabeth George keeps me glued to the pages, and sporadically reaching for the dictionary (reredos?).
I find it interesting that some people gave this one fewer stars because they hated the way Lynley behaved toward Havers etc. HELLO? THEY AREN'T REAL PEOPLE, PEOPLE! The fact that we are disappointed in him sort of indicates EG's skill at characterization, wouldn't you say?
Anyhow, complex plot, and I didn't recall all the details from the first time I read it (I...more

I've been renting the BBC productions of Elizabeth George's Lynley books from NetFlix, and for some reason the season that includes this book is unavailable. Since it falls in the middle of the series and at a critical plot juncture for one of the main characters (and because I'm OC about doing series in order) I picked up the book to fill in. Although the characters are a bit different in print vs TV (especially Havers) I enjoyed it - it's well plotted, with intelligent writing and classic En...more

Finally got to read a full Inspector Lynley book. Quite full it was, too, at 700+ pages. It was pretty good, but I found some of the things that annoyed me about A Place of Hiding also annoyed me here: the sense that certain details were provided to "prove" the author's familiarity with England and the English; the failure to provide satisfactory closure with certain subplots and characters; and a vague sense that this book couldn't possibly go on much longer. Would have liked to see t...more

Barbara Havers is in disgrace for not blindly following the orders of a superior officer. Lynley is piqued and takes another DC along on his new case in Calder Moors where a man and a women have been violently murdered. Barbara is asked to check the computer for old criminals that may have killed the woman to get back at her father who had been a somewhat famous DI. Of course, Havers can't stand being sidelined so she strats solving the case by following the trail the woman had left in London wh...more

(#10 of the Havers-Lynley series)-This is another intricate plot with several characters and mini-plots happening all at once. George writes in a way where you don’t get lost and everything comes together at the end. This was about the murder of Nicola and Terry. Nicola was a beautiful girl sought after by many. Terry, it was thought, was just a victim of circumstances. Lynley is on the case because he knows Nicola’s dad and he asks Tommy to be on the task force. Andy, the father, is a ...more

I like this book a lot. I enjoy English mysteries and this one had a lot to offer. It had almost 600 pages and I remember about the middle wondering what she could have to say for another 300. Well she did a great job and kept us wondering who was behind the murders. The only thing a wish is that I had read the book before this. I love series books and I'm sure the Inspecter Lynley series is a good read.

I love British detective novels. I know they're supposed to be the equivalent of junk food for the eductated mind (snort) but I love 'em! The characters and back stories and settings are so rich. This one was the best one on Barbara Havers that I've read. And the little girl is just so captivating! The idea I'm taking away from this book: You have to judge the quality of your decisions by the results.

I enjoyed this book, although as usual I get rather annoyed by Lynley's supercilious (sp??) attitude. The book goes into the nature of relationships and the way they make you react to situations, not always sensibly.

I have to stop reading 600 page books! On the other hand, if they are all as well written as this book it wouldn't matter. I liked the way each person was sure who had committed the crimes and tugged each other back and forth to try to show their side. You really don't know who did it until about 30 or 40 pages from the end.

I consume Elizabeth George novels the minute I get my hands on them. Barbara Havers is an awesome mess (the woman portraying her in the BBC shows is ok, but not dissheveled enough).

Elizabeth George does write an engrossing tale, with great detail in both the characters and the plot itself. Another good read!

I find it astonishing that I'm still guessing "whodunnit" 30 pages from the end of the book. Great psychological mysteries.

Reading this book now. Glad I don't live in England. But I sure learn weird things about England from her books.

This is book 10 in this series, but I found you don't have to have read the other books to know what is going on. If you like mysteries, this one's a good one.
