[These notes were made in 1983:]. This is a well thought out, interesting story, close to the original series in both conception and philosophy. Kirk and his stalwarts find themselves battling war-mongering on both the Romulan and Federation sides - precisely that paranoid mistrust which is all too familiar from our own super-powers these days. Add to that the serious implications of a computer in love with the Captain, and you have a genuinely workable plot. M.S. Murdock nowhere gives any clue...more

An extremely slow story with only a few positives to recommend it and a number of glaring negatives. First, the positives:
The writing was a bit over the top at times, but was generally good. The characters were well drawn--the characters we know acted like themselves and the characters we didn't seemed better than two-dimensional--and the plot was fairly believable. No glaring scientific impossibilities (though at one point Kirk has the Enterprise go from one side of a planet to the other at War...more

Misogynist, badly paced, weak Star Trek novel featuring the Original Series crew. The Enterprise computer is programmed with female personality and falls in love with Captain Kirk. This results in deliberate computer malfunctions as "she" cannot concentrate on anything more than "her" love for Captain Kirk, including wiping the hard drive of the records of all female crewmembers in an effort to "kill the competition." Meanwhile, three other subplots unfold and quickly become disjointed and confu...more
A well-written Star Trek novel, set during the Original series right after the episode 'Tomorrow Is Yesterday'.
Without having been given time to repair the ship's computer from an annoying personality, the Enterprise's must go to patrol the Neutral Zone and face confrontation with Romulans, while also dealing with multiple malfunctions aboard. Romulan fans should like this novel even more than I did. Definitely recommended.

Following directly on from 'Tomorrow Is Yesterday', the Enterprise computer is still crushing on her captain. It's become full-bore obsessive and jealous, a dangerous malfunction even while the Romulans are massing for invasion.
Good characterization for the Romulans: S'Talon and S'Tarleya are appealing and honourable foes. It's really their story. And if the Romulans are more sympathetic today, there's Starfleet Admiral Iota playing the part of the hawk and itching for a fight.
It's a good read...more
