Island Of The Aunts is Eva Ibbotson's magical, sea-side fantasy with an environmental message.
Three oddball aunts; Etta, Coral and Myrtle live on a secret island.....caring for a wide variety of animals ranging fom ordinary chickens to mystical creatures like selkies, boobries and even a family of abandoned, oil-slick mermaids. Sisters Etta, Cora, and Myrtle are getting older and they know that they're going to need some help taking care of the creatures that reside on their island. What they need are a couple of strong, open-minded children. Children nobody seems to want. Children who will grow up on the island and learn to love and care for the creatures that come there for help. There doesn't seem to be any other way to get such children except to kidnap them. So that's what the sisters decide to do.

This book is about an island called Island of the Aunts. The aunts kidnapp these two kids from a place not on the island. The Kracken (who is good by the way) has to leave his son with the aunts while he goes to save the ocean. The island is full of make-believe animals like mermaids and Krackens(duh!) Just read it because it is REALLY good!
I liked this book so much that I did a pop-up book on it in 5th grade!

Ibbotson's books are really predictable, right down to the twist endings; you knew the kids who were originally kidnapped to work on the island would eventually learn to love it and want to stay. And that's what happened.

Really good book. Easy and fun. Can be sad....depends on your personality i guess....It is about an island where amazing creatures live, like mermaids. and then tragidy strikes and all their plans fall apart and..........

This was another book I stole from my daughter. It was okay. I didn't love it, but I am not a huge fan of young adult fiction. I find I get bored easily. I can see it would be a great story for 8-12 year olds.

Ok book. For younger children (which I typically love) and I would read to my cousins. I liked the idea that everyone has to chip in and take care of things. Chores are healthy, people!!

I didn't get into this one quite as much as some of the other books by Ibbotson that I've read, but it's still quite entertaining. Strong environmental message.

I wish I were still 12 and living on this island, or I wish Bainbridge were the Island of the Aunts- how come we don't have mermaids and krakens?!?

I loved this book so much! It is so fantasy but yet so real, so funny but yet so serious. But in every way it is one of my favorite books.

I've read this book twice, once for each of my daughters' parent-child book club (3rd grade level). Very enjoyable and funny.

Not as predictable as "Platform 13", but the amount of violence is a bit disturbing. Overall though, entertaining.

A really cute book! More light reading than in depth hard core novel, but a fun read.
