One of the most horrifying children's stories but a realistic one. With unflinching philosophy of nature being "red in tooth and claw", we read that (1) children are abandoned due to famine by their parents; step-mother should be distrusted due to lack of blood connection (2) stupidity leads to disaster -- the trick of "migajas el pan" (bread crumb) ate by birds (3) un pajaro blanco cantab tan bien -- pretty white bird who sings so well -- is leading one to bigger disaster (4) eat whatever you l ...more

I thought this may not be the best bed time story due to the chidren's abandonment in the woods and killing a wicked witch, but it didn't really bother Samantha. She said she liked it. OK!

The book was great and didn't stray far from the original story of Hansel and Gretel. The illustrations were great also, and they complement the text rather well. The book does have a happy ending, but despite this, it still might be a bit scary for children. They might not like how the parents decide to leave the kids, and how the kids come upon a witch who eats children. Other than that, it was a great adaptation of Hansel and Gretel.
