Just a great feel-good book, that for some wonderful reason, my kids adore.

Mr. Hatch is a solitary man until one day when he recieves a surpise valentine from a secret admirer. This prompts him to do good deeds for everyone he comes in contact with until Mr. Hatch is a favorite of everyone in the neighborhood. Then the postman comes to tell Mr. Hatch that the valentine was delivered on accident & wasn't actually for him. Poor Mr. Hatch! He doesn't think anyone loves him anymore & falls b...more

I loved this one! My favorite Valentine's-themed children's book so far.

We love this story at our house. The main character Mr.Hatch has a case of the 'grouchies' and lackluster for life. He doesn't smile, talk to others much or engage in life outside of his mundane routine. He does the exact same thing everyday with the exact same expression. Then on Valentine's Day he receives a heart shaped box filled with yummy treats and a note saying "Somebody Loves You!" The story continues with a transformed Mr.Hatch who has a renewed zest for life. The happier he acts the m...more

It's amazing how one little thing, even something as serendipitous as a happy accident, can alter one's mental perspective and so make for eventual major change in one's entire life.

That is what's at work in this book. Mr. Hatch is a somewhat cold, distant man, who takes little notice or care regarding those around him and simply lives his own life, impervious to outside influences. Until, that is, one Valentine's Day when he receives a package in the mail. It's a heart-shaped box of chocolat...more

The perfect Valentine's story!

The artwork is a starting to look a little dated, but will still hold appeal with your elementary aged child. The true charm of this book is in the the narrative. The main character, Mr. Hatch, goes from a dull, gray, lonely life to that of humble-kind-good-friend-to-all. It was always in him, he just needed something to connect him to those around him and it comes as a super-large heart shape box of candies from an anonymous admirer... but little does he know that...more

What a great story to read for Valentine's Day! I read this book for the first time this year, and I also found a great video link that has someone reading the story aloud to the pictures of the book, which is super for the ELLs and auditory learners in the classroom! This book is about a boring and quiet man, Mr. Hatch, who receives a mysterious Valentine, which turns him into a very happy and loving man. There's a lot more to the story, but I don't want to ruin it for you! Just know--it teache...more

I love this book because it teaches a great lesson of uplifting. Even if it’s not on a holiday or special occasion. This story shows the important impact of showing someone you care, or are thinking about them; because you just never know when someone really needs something to lift them up when they are feeling down.

I also loved this book because of the illustrations. They tell the story just as much as the words do with it. The colorful detail, from the exciting package Mr. Hatch gets, to the e...more

What a great story! Perfect for Valentine's day or really any day you need to read a great story on love and friendship. The writing and illustrations are both perfect in this story. They work together to bring the story to life as you read along. You can not only read, but feel the emotions as you read the story. IT makes you connect more to what is happening in the story. I found the ending to be a perfect way to teach friendship and acceptance to all readers.

This story is great to read around Valentines Day because it is about a man who was very quiet and didn’t speak to people. One day the man received a package in the mail. It was a Valentines Day card and he was so surprised. He had a secret admire. After that he became more friendly and talked to everyone he saw. He was very helpful and more generous, smiling, and laughing all the time. This teaches children that the smallest gesture can make the biggest difference in someones life.

Good for Valentine's Day. The story of a man who lives a lonely monotonous life, until he receives a package from a secret admirer. The package changes the way he treats everyone, but then he finds that the package was delivered to him by mistake. He is crushed and goes back to his old lonely life. His new friends refuse to let him go though. The community comes together to let Mr. Hatch know that they really do love him.

This was WOONNNDERRFFULLL!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Mr. Hatch lives a simple life and keeps to himself. One day he gets a Valentine and he his whole demeanor changes. He becomes more open to people and realizes that he can help others and others help him. It is a great book to use to show how small things can make a very big difference in someone's life for we do not always know what others are going through.

Ahhh, this is a sweet story about a lonely man who get a heart-shaped box of candy for Valentine's Day. My son was entranced by the huge box of chocolates and I am pretty sure he would love to receive it, too!

This book makes me want to go out and buy chocolates for people who live alone.

This book is also currently available at http://www.storylineonline.net/ which was something I didn't realize.

I think all of us have experienced getting mail that isn't ours at some point. You really feel bad for Mr. Hatch. He is so sad when he learns that the lavish box of chocolate and mysterious love note was not intended for him. Luckily he does learn that others love him.

Hector Elizondo read the book. It's a super site!

Heartwarming story about a man who becomes friendly and outgoing after receiving a mysterious valentines package. When it turns out to be a mistake he withdraws into himself again until the whole town rallies round him and he realizes he is loved after all. Worth a read for valentines day. Check it out of the library. Wouldn't purchase it though.

A Valentine picture book that adults will enjoy as much as (if not more than) the kids. There’s a lot of text on the page on this one (my two-year-old couldn't make it all the way through — she got bored), but the storyline was heartwarming and there’s some great lessons in here about reaching out to others. I could learn a lot from Mr. Hatch!

I love , love, love this book! I would definitely read this at the beginning of the school year to let students know that they are loved. I will talk with my students about how important it is to let one another know that they are appreciated because when someone is loved and appreciated it shows in their actions to everyone else.

Mr. Hatch is a lonely man, who doesn't really talk to anyone. That is until one day Mr. Hatch receives a mysterious letter that reads, "Somebody loves you, Mr. Hatch." This unexpected note makes Mr. Hatch feel on top of the world. This note changes everything about the way Mr. Hatch interacts with the rest of the community.

At the end of this book my 7yr. old son was crying under the covers. This is a touching story about how important it is for people to feel loved. Great Valentines book. oops--the one we read is a little bit of a different version--we read the paperback Somebody Loves you, Mr. Hatch (not the one that says Stories to Go)

This is a sweet story about how when a person puts out the effort to be involved in other people's lives, he/she can make friends and become important to many people. I think that this is a very valuable message for kids. That really we can choose to be lonely if we want to. It's really up to us.
Shelley Daugherty
A story about a man who is a loner who accidentally receives a Valentine's day package which changes his whole view of the world. Though the package was a mistake, the world gets it's first real view of Mr. Hatch and he's not such a bad guy after all!

This story can teach students an important lesson about being compassionate towards one another. The story shows that a persons compassion can have an enormous effect on another. This book can also help to aid in building the community within the classroom.

It is perhaps a little far-fetched that young kids can think outside themselves enough to really understand the point of this book. My daughter says she enjoyed the story anyway -- but who doesn't love getting suprise packages in the mail. What is up with the weird rat that follows him around - that was kinda creepy.

I love this book! I'm trying to locate it so I can own it. Definitely one of my all time favorite children's book. It makes you feel like there's hope in the world and the illustrations are the best.

I love this book so much and it is a good way to teach your students the importance of being kind and including everyone. It is fun to do a read aloud with this book for a Valentine's Day Celebration.
Samantha Lazar
A lonely shoelace factory worker is sent a valentine card, or so he thinks. When he thought someone really cared about him, it changed the way he socialized with other people. He became more friendly and outgoing. However, he finds out that the card wasn't meant for him and shuts down. The people that he made friends with miss him, and he realizes that people do really care about him.

Mr. Hatch has a routine. Too bad it's so entirely lonely. Then, one Valentine's Day, someone sends him a package with a note. Somebody loves him! Oh!

Sweet Valentine's Story. If you're nice, other people are nice. Let's be nice to people, even if they don't deserve it. love!

Read this cute children's book for Valentine's Day. Loved the message - people always do better when they know they are loved. My daughter-in-law recommended it to me.

Very sweet tale of how our actions--even small ones--can change lives. Mr. Hatch lives alone, goes to work, goes home, never talks, never smiles, goes to bed, and... that's all. Mr. Hatch is lonely, he just doesn't realize it. But everything changes one Valentine's Day when a package is delivered straight to him, and inside is a giant box in the shape of a heart, full of chocolates, with a note that says, "someone loves you." In one moment, Mr. Hatch has a new outlook on life. Someone loves me?...more
