Published while the war was still ongoing, this posthumously published collection of letters by a French painter to his mother provides first-hand reactions to the Great War. While Lemarcier is certainly acutely aware of the suffering of the soldiers, he is also idealistic throughout, convinced that a purer, united European civilization will result from the war.
