Let's be clear about the rating. 2 stars means: 'It was ok.' And it was. Not brilliant, but certainly not bad.

The overall plot was complex enough to keep me entertained, the characters well-written and for the most part believable.

I liked Kate very much, apart for the continual comments about her clothes and how she kept tearing them I kept wondering how she could possibly afford them all and the author seemed to have a fixation on what she wore. It isn't necessary. Clothes. That's all. She is

A thrilling and hilarious read!

The main characters are great, especially Natalie who I completely relate to. I was pulled into this mystery from the gate, while Kate and Natalie had me laughing out loud, as my hubby gave me the, "Yep, she's finally lost her last marble!" Glare.

The story line with its many twists and turns kept me turning pages, eager to find out what happened next and the comical banters between Kate and Natalie ensnared me to this series - I'm eager to read their next case toge

Maybe it's my age, I'm not "hip" enough(?), but I had a real problem with all the sexual euphemisms, graphic language, and immature conversations or situations, including hooting over a guy by the name of Harry Weiner. Lots of crying over ruined Gucci or name brand clothing. Best friends with an English woman, Natalie, who seems to be in the US to run a string of profanities in Cockney(?) English or some kind of slang meant to be funny--but obnoxious instead. Can't really understand how a ...more

Packed this in at 17%. It's all a bit too silly for me, not taking the story very seriously. I prefer my murderation to be humourless, I guess. Plus it has some annoying mistakes in it, too.
Certain things I believe were totally lost in translation-I didn't "get" it when she says-"I thought for a moment when you said Sheikh you were talkin' about a picture of a condom on the gym" nor a mention of someone being called Harry Weiner and the fact he couldn't survive with a name like that instead of i

After reading two free Kindle books that were dogs, I had some real reservations about starting this one.

Happily, I was proven wrong.

Kate Sexton, an LAPD detective, lands in hot water for stopping a superior officer from gunning down an unarmed man then helping that man, another LAPD detective wanted on a fugitive warrant, elude arrest for a crime he swears he didn’t commit. She also sets out to prove his innocence, which brings her to the attention of some very powerful people who want to cover

Good read

I enjoyed reading this book. The character of Natalie was a bit over the top at times but I liked the others. A strong female detective sets out to prove a fellow detectives innocence and solve a 30 year old disappearance. Book does contain graphic violence scenes but what do you expect when reading about psychos?

Very good thriller. Liked the first person narrative. May be too much blood and gore for some readers.

far too grim and gritty for my tastes. very, very noir.
Detective Kate Sexton works the Hollywood beat. Recently divorced and broke, she becomes embroiled in a murder case that is linked to a cold case from 30 years ago. With her canine partner, Bernie, her profane BFF Natalie and a retired cop, she sets out to solve the crimes and save her career.

This book was entertaining and the mystery is pretty good. Although there was plenty to laugh about, the crimes had a hard edge as do many of the characters. I found Natalie's constant sexual references a b

Kelly spins a good tale BUT...

I have to say, it's the plot and not the writing that kept me reading this book to the end. I stopped about halfway through and read the reviews. This is something I've never done before, but I was having qualms and wanted to see what my peers thought.
So, always in with one thing that others have said as well.Way too many metaphors, many of them corny at that.
I didn't mind the explicit violence, and as a rule I don't mind well-placed sex references. I'm a big fan

Hollywood Assassin: A Hollywood Alphabet Series Thriller by M.Z. Kelly is the first in the Hollywood Alphabet series of mysteries, each of which contains an interesting Hollywood fact or quote from a famous movie star. In this riveting suspense thriller, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Kate Sexton makes a desperate attempt to save the life and reputation of a fellow cop whose life is on the line in connection with a murder case.

But that is easier said than done. A serial killer is on the

Okay, I surprised myself with this book - I got it for free and gave up after the first chapter - it just seemed too much like a bad parody of a pulp cop novel gone wrong. It came up again, on a list of free books and had some pretty good reviews, so I decided to give it another chance.

I'm actually glad I did. Natalie is pretty hard to get past and I hope if he keeps her that she will develop into less of a really bad joke and interject FAR less really, really tacky references to any and all thi

Hollywood Assassin is a jolly good gumshoe novel. Kate Sexton is detective in Hollywood and she seems to have a dark cloud that seems to follow her around in her personal and work life. She prevents her boss from shooting an unarmed suspect in the back and her life goes even further downhill from there. She’s under the microscope from Internal Affairs for improper actions in the line of duty. Kate is a clean cop and follows the leads of corruption in the hills of Hollywood.

Detective Kate Sexton is in trouble with her captain, Marvin Drake. Drake accuses her of thwarting his attempt to shoot rogue cop, Jack Bautista, who’s at the center of a murder investigation involving a young woman. Kate’s convinced that Jack was unarmed, so why does Drake keep insisting otherwise? Thinking that Jack might have been framed for murder, Kate decides to investigate, but it quickly becomes clear that helping him has created formidable enemies.

Thrill in Killing!

Detective Sexton and her canine partner acted quickly to save another unarmed detective from being shot in the back. Her Captain was appalled and was bringing her up on the carpet. This caused her to think something was going down and why would the Captain try to pin a murder on one of his own?

Her life became one coincidence after another, or was it a coincidence or someone trying to kill her? Good mystery even though the start was a little slow.

As the chapters read on, there

I loved the book. If you like noir and Hollywood you'll love it. MZ Kelly is a former police officer. He has created some bad guys that can scare the crap out of you. A sassy wise cracking British side kick was hilarious and should do well when the book becomes a movie. The plot was complex and kept you turning pages.

One of the few books that used an animal as a character with issues. Very refreshing. Looking forward to more in this series. So if you like danger, drama, murder, hopelessly comple

I like the character, Kate! She an independent strong woman who cares about her family and her dog partner, Bernie. She's trying to recover from a bad marriage and she's trying to be in good financial standing but it's a struggle. She gets into a heap of trouble and you wonder how she'll get out of it. She solves several murders and helps a fellow cop. I like the other characters in the book too. This is my first book to read in the series. I hope to read the others and I hope the other ...more

Intriguing Mystery

Interesting and intriguing mystery with numerous characters somehow involved with each other in a hierarchy of control. The heroine has to figure out who is involved and how all the pieces fit before she is terminated as a detective and her brother is convicted of being a drug dealer. Furthermore a fellow officer is being framed for a murder he did not commit. There is an interesting cast of characters that the author develops from a divorced detective, to a psychopathic killer

This is a rather off the wall book, with sexual aberrations, people who are not sure of their orientation sexually, and a fair amount of violence. Kate's marriage has gone belly up--she gets along better with her police dog partner, her brother is gay, and their mother has hallucinations about having sex with ex-President, and now dead, RIchard Nixon! On top of that, there is a man who wants to kill her. He has already killed a number of other people, and her black police dog partner has gotten ...more

I love 'Hollywood Assassin'. The storyline is full full of suspense, mystery, drama and is so hilarious. I loved how the story played out. The characters are great. I love Kate's wit and humor. She seems to attract situations that get her into some sort of trouble or another. Natalie is by far one of the most colorful characters I've read about in a long time. Her comparisons to different situations are off the wall hilarious. I can't wait to read more of this series. Definitely a must add to ...more

I loved this story. It was funny, suspenseful and just a great read. I found Kate to be strong, even with all the craziness in her life, she stood her ground in her convictions and I really liked that about her. Natalie was so sweet, goofy and very brave. Bernie was an awesome K-9 partner, even if he did have a thing for the furry ladies. Kane was someone I had no problem hating, he was a flippin' maniac.

Was not sure from the start if I was going to finish the book. I was thinking it was not my style..... but for whatever reason kept on going and found I enjoyed the story.
Kate's character started to reel me in and was not sure what Natalie was going to do next. There was just something about her that made you like her and you had to enjoy her humor.

Wow great find, recommend by a friend. And I too would recommend it to anyone that likes strong female leads. It's funny to me as many authors think you must put your lead character in some ridiculous sex scene to make the plot move, this plot moves without that and the only ones having sex are the bad guys. Because you need the bad too. this author in this book telegraphs way to early who is going to die I mean you are introduced to a character and you know he isn't going to see the end of the ...more

I really didn't like the sister. she was raunchy which pretty much ruin the book for me.
I really enjoyed this one. The protagonist (reminiscent of Konrath's Jack Daniels) and her friend (something like an English version of Stephanie Plum, who was a bit of an annoyance in the beginning, but she grew on me) brought drama and humor to the story. The other people Kate Sexton brought to the story (a few friends and co-workers)were likeable and interesting. I have one more in this series and I'll be reading it soon. I rate this one 4.5 stars.

"A straightforward no-nonsense thriller"

This had everything I enjoy in a thriller. A plot that was easy to follow, good characters that had their all too human flaws and bad characters that deserved everything they got. The dialogue was perfectly pitched for whichever situation was under the microscope. There was plenty of action, plenty of humour and I was left thinking that a few more of the Hollywood titles would be finding their way onto my kindle over the rest of the summer.

Have read much better books.

The story line is okay. But I got so tired off the supposedly funny jokes/remarks. Instead of being funny haha, they were funny weird. And some were downright stupid. I almost didn't finish reading this book, but kept hoping the author would cut down on his un-funny remarks. My hoping for that was in vain though.
I don't want to read the other ones in the series. There are too many other good ones available to read instead.

“Can we check it out of the library?” Natalie asked. “Got me library card right here in me purse.” “I’m afraid not,” Canfield said. “The film is in Hutchinson.” “Where?” I asked. “It’s an underground film vault in Kansas, really just a big salt mine that absorbs moisture and prevents deterioration of prints and negatives.
