A lovely and painful attribute of short stories is that their brevity can create a swift jab to the gut of the reader. For me, this isn't usually the case, but when it does happen in a short story collection, one story like that can actually make me think that the entire book is phenomenal. David Armstrong's debut collection has much more than just one jab in it. Accessible literature that weaves thought provoking narratives through bold, original, and intricate characters. "Courier," "Butterscotch," "Strawman," and "Murray" shine especially brightly in this collection of distinct, yet connected stories.
