In 1940, the nation will almost certainly enter the war in Europe, and everyone is worried. One winter's night, in a two-family household deep in Wisconsin farm country, four-year-old Silje Reiersen hears a knock on the door. A stranger wants shelter for the night. The farmers doing chores in the barn allow the man to sleep overnight in the hayloft. The next morning, the ...more

I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program and would like to thank everyone who made that happen!

There was a very well defined sense of time and place throughout this book which I loved. It was very entertaining and I enjoyed the radio quotes at the start of each chapter. I really enjoyed all the details about the Norwegian culture and how the family lived and the telling of the story from a child's perspective reminded me a bit of the Little House on the Prair

I won this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. Thank you!

I really loved this book. The writing, straightforward and clean, was like a palate cleanser after reading several books that were muddled by overly descriptive narratives. This book is a murder mystery seen through the eyes of a little girl living in a small Norwegian-Amercian community in Wisconsin during the 1940's. The story, as well as the character development, was very good and kept me reading with an eagerness to know wh

Read this book because it is the first in a series by this author, and I received the second one free through the Goodread First Reads program. Although they are stand-alone novels, I wanted to get an idea of the writing of this author, who apparently began writing for the commercial market in her 70s. Definitely an inspiration for older adults.

The story's setting is 1940s Wisconsin, particularly the Norwegian immigrant population and their children. The main character is Silje, a five-year-old

I found God's Child: The Origin of Fear to be quite enjoyable. The Characters were nicely developed. The plot, though not really a true mystery since the reader is not really left wondering who the killer was for long, was nice. It dealt more with exploring family life, in particular how children grew up in the 1940s. The author seemed to truly understand how a child thinks.

The one thing keeping this story from being a five star read was how it seemed to ran

this is a mystery about a murder that happens in an norwegian american rural community just before world war 2 starts. main character is a young girl who am sure will be growing up in future books.it taught me about many norwegian aspects of life..although she did go on a bit too much about the games children played and i found i skimmed a bit. i heard it is for young adults although i am a senior and did not put the book down. all in all it was well written and i would give it 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

My first eBook, written by a good friend for her grandchildren. This is the 1st in her series of mysteries that also tell her own story. Silje is a young girl, growing up on a farm in Wisconsin at the beginning of WWII. She lives with her parents and cousin, Nils and his parents in a close-knit Norwegian community. This is a wonderful story of childhood and Norwegian customs and memories with a mystery to keep the plot going. Lots of fun and I am looking forward to the next one.
