(Might be some spoilers!!!)
Sophie Mckenzie is one of my all-time favourite authors. I read many of her books when I was younger and I continue to read and reread them now. I could possibly stretch to say that the Blood Ties series is my favourite of hers, but I don't know, It's too hard!
The characters are amazing, I love how much Rachel changes and how you can really feel it through-out the book. Also, the change in characters every chapter is genious. Not only can you see what they're both doin...more

I thought that Blood Ties was a very challenging book because it's about cloning and wars. As this is a very rare subject, it was obvious that it would be different from Sophie’s other books. Blood Ties is about a Theo and Rachel who are the main characters. At first the two don’t know each other but as the story develops they meet, as Theo wants to learn more about his father after his mother, reveals that nearly all the things he thought he knew about his father, were lies. Theo wants to know...more

MAY CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS!!! (I have tried to keep out as many spoilers as possible… but there are still a few in there; such as who ends up with who… and stuff…)
I first started reading this book because I saw it was written by Sophie McKenzie, who has also written Girl, Missing. I really enjoyed reading Girl, Missing, and after reading this, I felt that this book was a bit of a let down. I felt that the plot didn’t flow very fast and it sometimes got side- tracked. Another really popular author from my library. I keep putting more and more Sophie McKenzies out on the shelves but they disappear straight away, so while I still had this in my sticky mitts I thought I'd see if she is really all that. I'd say this is a slightly above average teen thriller. It's about two kids who get caught up in a genetics/cloning scandal, and there's a romantic twist too. I raced through it and was really engaged for the first half but found myself skimming through large sect...more
Blood ties is an un-put-down-able. If you pick it up you have to read it all the way to the end, unless you don't like it of course. I love it because the name really sums it up, but you don't figure that bit out until the middle. Theo and Rachel are two ordinary kids in their teens, or so they think. Rachel is always being compared to her older sister that died before she was born by her parents, and Theo has a bodyguard, but he doesn't know why, and he's never met his dad. His mum told him tha...more
meh, that's the impact that this book had on me. Eh, it was alright, didn't love it, didn't hate it.
The plotline was interesting and easy to follow, it just wasn't gripping enough, not to mention how much the main characters annoyed me.
Theo was just angsty and angry all the time, and when I say that, I really mean all the time. Rachel on the other hand, I was torn about whether to hug or slap her, her insecurities and the way she was so shy got on my nerves, maybe it was because I felt that her...more

Unnecessary drama is the bane of my existence.
Okay, not really, but it’s pretty high up the list, right there with forced romances and nonsensical motivations, though one can make the point about this being all unnecessary drama. How does this tie in with today’s pick? Simply put, it ruined a perfectly good premise.
The pitch for “Blood Ties” is very ambiguous. Honestly, when I first saw it, the sci-fi aspect went completely in over my head. I knew there was a mystery, but not until the big revea...more

I read this book last year and i really liked the idea behind it, the blurb made me want to read it straight away. I had read the The set-up by Mckenzie before, and i loved it, so i just had to read this one. Mckenzie was one of my favourite authors and this book just made me love her even more. As i said the whole idea of clones existing i found interesting, especially as it wasn't set way in the future so world building was not nessisary, not that i don't love dystopian books i was just excite...more
Sophie McKenzie must be one of my favorite authors of all time. She is right up there with J.K Rowling.
I found this book in the library and read the first few pages, and then I basically fell in love with it. It was so easy to read, and didn't have all the unnecessary, random information at the beginning that many books seem to have. I didn't put it down until it was finished and nearly cried when it was over.

Words to describe this novel and the author Sophie McKenizie:
Moledro – a feeling of resonant connection with an author or artist you'll never meet.
This book was my gateway novel to the wonders of words. I implore you on the novel that made me gush with the first-time experience of romance stirred and boiled with action.
The book rotates from the two main protagonists Rachel (which is also my name: one point added towards the reasons of why I used to adore this book) and Theo (whom I adored so mu...more

well they got the gripping thriller part right. I only read this book because it was chosen for our book club and would not have picked it u otherwise, probably because of the rather boy-like cover, but i did not regret a single moment. From the point where i picked it up to when i put it down there was non-stop action all the way throught that kept me enticed.
Also the way the book is told, one chapter by Rachael and the next by Theo is a really good idea because it goes into detail about thing...more

I read Blood Ties a few years ago and just re-read it after coming across the sequel (
Blood Ransom
) and wanted to refresh my memory. And I wasn't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this amazing book once again, and it certainly left me with much to think about. Who were the good guys and the bad guys? The egoistic, self-righteous ass who meddles with genetics and plays God for what he claims to be a good cause? Or the terrorist group who believes such work immoral and wants to stop and...more

The first thing I did after finishing this book was to grab my copy of Blood Ransom. The second was to ask myself how on EARTH I had never read a Sophie McKenzie book before. It really was that good!
The story follows two main characters, Rachel and Theo, using a dual narrative. I love this format and it works brilliantly here. I adored Rachel and loved watching her character grow and gain more confidence. Theo is perhaps slightly more distant but that is explored in the story - and I r...more

I thought it was a very well written book. It was quite an unusual subject to write about though but I think that is what made it even better! It was very thrilling and it kept me wanting more!
Until next time guys!
P.S - love you Sophie Mckenzie and it was a pleasure meeting you at the Edinburgh Book Festival last August 2012, I was the girl that lost her autograph and needed a new one from you! The names Jen, Love you and your books :) xxx

Blood Ties is a really good book! It's narrated between two kids, Rachel and Theo. Theo finds out that his father is still alive and that he's in hiding from RAGE, the Righteous Army against Genetic Engineering. His search leads him to Rachel whose father has a connection with RAGE and his father. When people from RAGE attake him and Rachel their lives are changed forever. They must escape RAGE and in their journey they find out that they are not who they think they are. His father is actually E...more

I had hope for this book. I really did. The concept isn't new.. Adult science fiction has taken on cloning already with varying degrees of success. But to package it as a young adult story seemed like a great medium for the concept, despite the big reveal being obvious from the jacket cover. The writing started off pretty good and a realistic interpretation of the perspectives of a teenage boy and girl to the point that I got really excited about the whole thing. But as I was readin...more

This was brilliant. Really fast paced, with a brilliant plot line. The revelations about both Theo and Rachel's past kept me hooked. I loved how Rachel developed throughout the story, though (view spoiler). Would recommend to anyone. Must get the sequel!
It was alright, and that's about it. I read this after about three people in my english group said it was good and I'd loved books with similarish themes ( BZRK etc.) . I kept reading hoping that it would live up to the hype . It didn't. Probably worth reading, but only beacuse it's one of those books you feel you should have done.
No real comment,
No real comment,
Fun, fast-paced SF thriller for teens, with a hero and heroine who feel real and deeply sympathetic. I loved both Theo and Rachel and the way they grew throughout the novel. My favorite part of the book, though, was Rachel's character arc and the way she found her own inner strength. I really, really loved that part!
