It's been a long time since I've had a freshly unread Fables trade and I was really looking forward to reading this. Sadly it wasn't all that great, but just good enough to keep me interested in reading this series (when I can get them from the library).

Flycatcher -- always a bumbling, comical sort of character -- has just realized that he was a prince in the Homelands and that his family was killed horribly. After the spirit of Lancelot (which had been hanging around Fabletown all t...more

I stopped reading Fables in the singles format a long time ago. The way the stories are constructed it just made more sense to read them all at once. However, after I made that decision I just never got around to picking up any of the trades. I was listening to the Awesomed By Comics podcast and they really talked up 'The Good Prince' storyline. When I got a bit of extra money I bought it and was blown away by the story.

I loved the way that Willingham took a minor character who w...more

I love this series with all of my little heart. Bringing old fable and fairy-tale characters into a modern-day setting in our world, united by a threat to their Homelands, I think the series is utterly brilliant and creative. This particular volume focuses on a character who has previously been mostly in the background. Flycatcher, known to most of us as the Frog Prince, takes on a central role in this book and finds his strength to fulfill his destiny. Which is, essentially, being an undefe...more

Though I still have many on my "currently reading" list that I need to finish, I've had a lovely Sunday afternoon reading comics with my feller. For him, each issue is a snack to be savored until the next issue comes out. I would rather wait until at least one story arc is complete, then read a bunch of issues in one sitting so it feels more like a complete novella (or at least a short story) instead of just a few teaser pages at a time. Before starting my goodreads profile I'd alre...more

I will admit this story could have used some refining. There are portions where Willingham feels like he wants to get from point A to B so strongly he forgets to make the journey. And the Fabletown activities are just prep work.

But still, the story gives Ambrose his due. Do I wish it was better crafted? Yes. Do I feel that some necessary growth steps got entirely bypassed? Well, yes. Do I feel some of the movers were a little too inaccessible? Aye. But still, it's Ambrose. ...more

First off, this remains one of my very favourite current graphic novel series and I rush out for every new trade. (I couldn't imagine trying to read it in individual issues and it's worth the wait.)

Volume 10 was no different and I'd eagerly been anticipating Flycatcher's story for a while. But for an issue that had the potential to be very dark... it all just got kind of fluffy. The story took a different turn than I expected, but I just maybe wanted a little more angst.

This is my favorite volume!!! I loved Flycatcher (Prince Ambrose) from the moment I first read about him. He was quite, unassuming, sweet and a red-head! What more could you ask for in a man?

Flycatcher was a happily married man in the Homelands, with many children. He lived peacefully with his family, his only quirk being the occasional resumption of his frog curse when he was nervous, scared or especially excited. Fortunately it only took a kiss from his loving wife to return him to human form, and, as time went on, he would often go for years between instances of the curse asserting itself.

His tranquil family life was shattered when the Adversary invaded his realm. Fl...more

The structure and scope of Bill Willingham's Fables are pretty impressive all on their own. Imagine juggling that many characters, mythologies, folk tales and plot lines and trying to make something coherent out of them. But The Good Prince is something else entirely. It's a true epic in one volume, in which the lowliest, most insignificant of characters become the hero. It's a story of nobility, sacrifice, and courage, with echoes of Camelot and might men of valor. And quite a few surprises to ...more

There are rare times in life where as we get older we are fortunate to come across something so moving, so beautiful, so timeless, that it whisks us back to our childhoods- to fond memories past and forgotten.

Fables has always been one of those magical creations that transcends its own form to become something more- art that can move the heart.

With the 10th volume, Fables has become a modern day fairy tale which will be remembered for years to come. Here are the stori...more

Fables has, in my opinion, really gone downhill since the first couple of trades, but I keep reading them anyway. I wasn't really expecting much out of this volume, and ended up being pleasantly surprised.

This volume follows Flycatcher, the janitor of Fabletown, and some other characters in a sort of confusing quest to form a 3rd (peaceful) option for the fables in the war against the Adversary. I hadn't read the other books in awhile, so I was a LITTLE confused about what was going ...more

The best volume of Fables yet, this trade paperback recounts the story of Ambrose, aka "Flycatcher." One of my favorite Fabletown residents (and there are many wonderful ones from which to choose), Ambrose is the "frog prince" from fairy tales of old (his backstory is told as part of the beautiful stand-alone volume, 1,001 Nights of Snowfall). Ambrose met his princess wife, was married, became king, and had children. However, when he is confronted with extreme emotion, (fe...more

Graphic Novel. This bored me. It's like two hundred pages of Fly's origin story, except without the origin story so I have no idea where he's coming from. It's possible they went over some of this stuff in the previous trade -- they kept alluding to a spell I only remember vaguely -- but even excusing my faulty memory, I didn't really care about Fly or his magical kingdom, though he did find some clever ways to defeat the enemy armies. It was just too long: a lot of build up, not much climax. Th...more

Flycatcher, usually content with cleaning up after the rest of the fables, sets out on an adventure the clean up some of the Fables dispensed villains as well as some of the Homelands. It's a pretty epic 8-part story, and yet it's only the preface before the pending clash between the Fables and the Adversary.
I continue to be impressed by how effortlessly Bill Willingham has turned his cute little story of fairy tale characters living in New York into a sprawling epic. He's turned a sma...more

Damn, I think I'm back on board with this series. This one was really satisfying and epic, and had a real sense of forward momentum. I still find the ongoing battle with the adversary a little hard to get into, and I found this much more compelling. And it managed to use longstanding background details in a satisfying way, making the whole thing seem like exactly where the story was always heading.

Bill Willingham, Fables: The Good Prince (Vertigo, 2008)

Flycatcher has regained his memory, and now, as Prince Ambrose, it's time for him to claim—or reclaim, as it were—his destiny. With some surprising allies, he undertakes a quest that may well change the balance of power in the upcoming war between Fabletown and the Empire. Meanwhile, Fabletown are preparing for what they assume will be an all-out attack by the Empire on the mundane world, and to do that, they're going to hav...more

And this is the book that just blew my mind. And this series has the potential to have the sort of emotional resonance that BSG has for TV. ROLL WITH IT, GUYS.

Seriously, A+ - please read this series. What's fantastic is all these background players start coming into play (Blue got his shot, and man, he went for it, and now it's Fly's turn). When the series started, I was all about Snow and Bigby, but they're sort of stuck right at the moment (reassuring, the passage of time moves...more

I thought this was one of the stronger fables in the series- the story finally explains Flyswatter or Prince Ambrose's destiny as well as clearing up what/who the forsworn knight is and what happens to people down the witching well. Expect to see some faces we haven't heard from in a while....
